Sunday Parkways: Portland's First Ciclovia-Style Street Closure

Closing Streets to Cars
Seems like Bogotá is quickly turning into a model. Its Ciclovia concept ("Every Sunday, some 70 miles of the city's roads are closed to vehicle traffic and turned over to its citizens, who come out in droves to walk, jog, skate and especially bike.") is spreading across the world, from Istanbul to New York City, and now Portland with what it calls Sunday Parkways. The Bronx River Parkway in Westchester County, NY closes a 7mile section to cars on Sundays in May, June, and September from 10am to 2pm. Open to bikes, skates, joggers, and walkers.

Not a new Idea, hundreds of cities in the US and Eurpoe did this in response to the gas crisis of 73-74.It was all moslty short lived. Eugene Ore. kept it's downtown mall car free through the 90s.Eventually business interests forced the reopening to vehicles.
It's interesting that Porland, the least green part of Oregon has become known as the environmentally cool city.not that it isn't greener than the vast majority of US cities.
