Obama Wraps Up Nomination, Celebrates By Riding His Bike
by Andrew Posner, Providence, Rhode Island on 06. 8.08
Presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama has won our admiration before, thanks to his support of cycling and his support of public transportation, as well as his eagerness to address climate change, as exemplified by the fact that he would want Al Gore to help him on climate issues (however, we have also been less-than-impressed with Obama's stance on "clean coal" technology). Now, after a protracted, difficult campaign, Obama has finally won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. So how did he celebrate? According to the Associated Press, the Senator took the weekend off and "joined family and neighbors for a bicycle ride along the shores of Lake Michigan on Sunday."
This bit of news should erase any doubt left that Obama would be sympathetic to cause of cyclists. Then again, President Bush is known to be an avid cyclist, yet to our knowledge he hasn't gone out of his way to promote cycling for recreation or transportation. And while Obama still has to defeat John McCain in November, it's hard to resist imagining what it would be like to not only have a president that is a cyclist, but one that is also a bicycle advocate. When oil costs $130 a barrel, and given the desire for change in politics, that may no longer be an outlandish idea.
See photos of the ride after the fold.

Maybe its just me, but does his back tire look flat? :)
Cycling in jeans? Doesn't this man chafe?
There are even more opportunities to be green with a bicycle. I was writing on my blog about how you can create energy by riding your bicycle. It's just great.
A little odd really... cycling in jeans, and the photo also shows a trailer of some sort. It definitely looks like he's on half flat tires too. And to be really picky, his feet are set on the pedals odd for someone who bikes. Looks like publicity to me, I bet he went 100 feet.
It's time we had an elitist man-of-the-people in office. I like it.
Looks like the fashionazis have found another target. First no flag pin now he wears pants when bicycling like millions of other people on the planet.
I ride my bicycle in blue jeans every day. And the trailer is probably for towing all that baggage from the Democratic Party.
He must have borrowed the bike because it's way too small for him. I bike in jeans, too, but I guess it's a different thing for guys, eh?
This is not Barack Obama, -- Barack is 6' -1-1/2" This guy is only 5'-9" And what is with that chin strap. You can't fool all of us.
Okay we've established that Mr. Obama isn't doing a century. His choice of attire isn't the best for biking. That said, anyone who thinks you need spandex for a ten-mile jaunt with the kids is just plain silly. I for one like the sneakers and jeans: makes me think that maybe -- just maybe -- he considers biking a form of transport, not just exercise.
And he's pulling a trailer bike, presumably with kid aboard.
The tire might just be a shadow. He should raise the seat, though.
Ride On.
I see a lot of people in NYC riding bikes in jeans Even regular commuters ... it's the girls with the skin tight jeans and the high heel boots that are my hero.
I thought it was a wicked fender at first but it's an attachment for a pull behind kid bike, just has one wheel a seat a bar and some pedals.
Tire pressure? Does look a bit low. Maybe he hasn't been on it in a while. Maybe he's been a bit busy?
Hard to read into the pedal position.
Now if he could use the bike to go between sessions of Congress and duties in the White House ( I don't know how far that is so I am just blowing smoke) that would be cool. Imagine a whole detail of Secret Service on 2 wheels ... with the 'football' keys to the nuke missiles in a messenger bag!

Obama, in jeans? Gasp! Most people do cycle in jeans, it's not like he is a pro or anything, obviously. That "trailer" on the back is an InStep hitch bike I bet. Also, his feet aren't to far off, a little forward, but oh well, no one is perfect. Also, his tire looking flat may be due to the extra weight from that bicycle attachment for the kids?
"Looks like publicity to me, I bet he went 100 feet."
That, or he's in touch with his inner Fred.
Yeah, I concur that is probably not his bike.
I do short hops in jeans; yeah its uncomfortable, but less uncomfortable than people seeing my junk outlined in my cycling shorts.
Of course this is a publicity stunt- what you don't see are the SUVs full of Secret Service detail. If he was truly concerned about the environment he would have stayed at home and walked on a treadmill.
By the way, nice Mom Jeans, Barry.
This is the shallowest set of posts I have read on this site.
I cycle sometimes 30 miles.... in jeans,
I don't endorse Obama or Mccain any person who thinks they have the right to speak or act for my betterment or harm. Government and law is the illusion that we are protected from harm. They act backwards if at all, never proactively.
