Travelling in Style: Laura Bush in Flying Airstreams
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto

Don't get me wrong, I think it is terrific that Laura Bush is visiting the troops in Afganistan; at least someone in the US remembers that there is a war going on there. And we love Airstreams, and have written about them many times; it is great that they are shipping one over to keep her comfortable, it is almost as hot and miserable as Crawford over there. But really, she is the First Lady; why give her such a big old retro model? Look at that TV/VCR in the picture below the fold. And the furniture. Surely she deserves the latest Chris Deam model that you can dial up from Design within Reach. And there are 11 of these retro wonders, known as "'Senior Leader In Transit Conference Capsules"- surely our leaders deserve better than this.

No, there are some serious issues to be dealt with. That grey leather upholstery is so 70s. And the wood? Please.

The British got this right a century and a half ago; they designed campaign furniture that folded up nicely; Richard Wrightman is knocking it off in Brooklyn as we speak. Somehow the idea of shipping an Airstream by air seems a bit much; at least they could use a smaller, more modern unit than this. MetroUK via ::Wonkette
The images from Inhabitat below are far more appropriate. In a smaller, more energy efficient package, too.

You're making a joke right? This one's ugly so lets get a new one? I have no problem with the First Lady or anyone living in a 70's style Airstream for a while...have you SEEN the big house she stays in when in Washington? I think she'll live. And compared to what our soldiers have to deal with she'll be living the high life. I think this post has no place on Treehugger.
this is so ridiculous up.....she has done nothing to deserve this priviledged treatment...let her sleep in a tent
that article is nonsense when coupled with those pictures.
the description makes it worse.
if there is indeed a transport/shelter like that out there somewhere then how about some verifiable proof?
A tent! A tent for the first lady!
Do YOU sleep in a tent? She has done nothing to deserve less than the average person, at least. You haven't done anything to deserve a roof over your head at night, if she hasn't. She's been a good wife and mother at the very least, even if you don't agree with her ideals.
I do think the airstream (and shipping it by air) is a bit much, but there's no way she deserves a tent.
Let her sleep with the troops, so she can get a real taste of what her husband's war is really like! WHY is this on treehugger? Other than the total waste of fuel to fly accommodation out for a short visit by an over-pampered sloth.
It's 70's so get a new one ... What the? A new just arrived unit would be too easy to spot.
Using the old trailer is far more efficient and safer than buying new.
The problem here is shipping it by air, not by ship, or even better, using a unit that is available at location, or sleeping in with the troops.
surely the point is that airstreams are a good use of space, flying one to the other side of the world not so good but in general treehugger is a fan of smaller living, so when the media sees ms Bush using one, its got to be good, but its a missed opportunity to show that the new airstreams are beautiful. the media is going to think that small living = 70s retro when its so much more than that
No she doesn't deserve more than this, and stop calling me Shirley.
She looks like she's still waiting for Elvis to come back to Graceland. She should be going to visit the troops in the short bus.
*sigh*
"at least someone in the US remembers that there is a war going on there"
From your side of the border, it must be hard to see there are a lot of us that remember, thank you very much.
stupid bitch ran her car into someone.
Nice to see where our tax dollars are going. I don't see why the wife of a public servant (who regularly lives in the presidential palace on our buck) should be supplied and air freighted specialized accommodations while on a publicity tour.
The average American (ie soldier) in Afghanistan DOES sleep in a tent. If she doesn't like it, too bad. I doubt the soldiers are too fond of it, but they don't have a choice. Her husband has made the choice for them in starting these wars.
The audacity if it right in the face of those who's life is literally on the line. Let them eat cake, indeed.
Now, if she was to take one of the many FEMA trailers which where already paid for and going to waste...
I would have appreciated treehugger.com pointing out how un-green and ridiculous it is to flying a large trailer halfway across the world.
It seems that the White House's only mistake was to chose an older, uglier and less energy efficient model.
I suspect that the top officers have nicer digs than that over there. I'm sure they could have bunked up and left her a room to herself. ;)
You're suggesting a FEMA trailer? Really? Because we all know, it's such an awesome response, on the part of the US government, to disaster relief. NOT. They really aren't suitable for anything, not even First Lady Bush.
About the article though, this is retarded. I'm tired of seeing trash like this on Tree Hugger. Who do you guys hire to write articles like this?
Waste of bandwidth. This approach probably costs less and is greener than putting everyone up in an expensive luxury hotel (there are so many in Afghanistan) with all the additional baggage and people required for security reasons. Why not just have her sleep on the plane at a protected airbase?
i just hope that thing is strong enough because they are going to stone her there.
Go W! great way to get rid of your wife! she gets shot over there and your are single again, back to your coke parties!
It's probably bomb proof or something lame like that,
*sighs....
Wow, enough hate from commenters?
Here's how this works:
She didn't go trawling a used RV lot looking for a trailer. The federal government has a dozen of these trailers for use in field operations when you have a "VIP" coming in (say disaster areas when the head of FEMA needs to make a visit and no other accomodations are availalbe).
She didn't pick it, it simply is what is used in this situation. A great deal of government issued accomodations look like they're straight out of the 70's, just because it takes the people in charge so long to justify upgrading (especially when the equipment in question is still functional and STILL more comfortable than anything on-site).
I don't agree with flying it halfway around the world simply on the principle that it's wasteful of fuel, but that's where my objections end.
How about a little less hate for the writers/editors who get the articles up onto the site, 'kay?
Seconding the FEMA trailer; and send her mother in law along as well so she can grasp how it's "much better than these people are used to", or at least how stupid that statement was...
I'm not so much interested in commenting on the article or the valid/invalid use of money to send the First Lady and her trailer to Afghanistan. Instead, I would like to point out the portrayal of the war in Afghanistan as Bush's creation. Call the war in Iraq unjustified and Bush's Crusade, but the war in Afghanistan is justified and appropriate. The Taliban trained and partially financed the terrorists that killed 3,000 innocent Americans. The fight in Afghanistan should have been the true focus of our efforts in the War on Terrorism. Don't let the miserable debacle of the Iraq war divert your attention from why our soldiers were sent to Afghanistan in the first place. Hope for peace, hope for love and understanding. But when 3,000 Americans are mercilessly murdered, a response is warranted.
I don't get the joke, this post is bs
It's a C2 "Silver Bullet" module, which means that the interior photos that the Metro run are almost certainly fake, since pictures of the interior would be classified because of the commo and crypto gear in them. And wouldn't have curtains all over, since as you can see from the first video, all of the windows have been sealed and paneled over.

So, yes, she travels in a trailer inside the craft, just like the POTUS, SECDEF, and various other cabinet level and congressional officials do.

I cant believe such article to be on treehugger!!!!!!! Let her sleep with the troops, let her feel and smell the war as close as possible! I wont visit this site anymore, this site has lost credibility for posting such stupid and non-sense article to the site's main goal: eco-awareness!
