Oh How the Mighty Have Fallen: Hummer's Gas-Induced Collapse
by Jeremy Elton Jacquot, Los Angeles on 06. 7.08

Remember how GM's Hummer used to be the toast of the town among Hollywood glitterati and certain high placed politicians? It turns out the past few years (and ever-rising gas prices) haven't been kind to its fortunes -- as the LAT's Dan Neil chronicles in a piece appropriately entitled "Requiem for a heavyweight?" Mike also reported on Hummer's imminent downfall a few months ago; GM has said it will terminate production in 2014.

Yeah, but who are those 2,380 people per month still buying those things? What are they thinking? Why isn't the number zero? Are these people living under a rock?
I'm completely amazed when I see gas guzzlers with new car plates.
About time. We should bury schwarzenegger with it. He is the one who is responsible for the hummer scheme, purely out of his own selfish purpose. Now, he is a hypocrite with all his support for the environment. Perhaps, we should have him reimburse all those that bought these machines. All the gas they used to run their big machine is no longer the gas we now have available. Somehow, we should make irresponsible people account for their actions.
How is there still a market for these cars at all? it seems they're just a statement of "look at me im ridiculously selfish" how you could drive one and not be so completely ashamed of yourself is beyond me.
I agree with the above comment, people who are environmentally irresponsible should be accountable for their actions. I think an environmental tax on low gas mileage for new cars should be mandatory. Buy a hummer, pay a yearly environmental tax. And make it a whooper.
actually that's 2,380,000...
I saw a teenager driving one last night and I just wanted to burn it up.
The fact that ANYONE still buys these things and uses them just disgusts me. I think they should pay double at the pump and then have a $10.00 tax per gallon to help fund public transportation expansion.
I see no issue for if it is used for it's propose. A Hummer that never sees dirt is a crime, but that would be true for 90% of all 4WD trucks/SUV's. I want an H1, but for mudding, not for a 50 mile commute.
As far as a new tax to be used to build public transportation, they sucked me dry in Michigan and mass transit is nothing but a joke. One would be fired in a month for attendance with the crap that is in Flint, the MTA.

Those things are not built to go off road like most of the SUV's that are built and sold these days. Look it up and you can see the video of how easy the axles hold the wheels on. Here is a hint.... not very well.
SUV and pickup drivers should have to apply for a special permit and prove that they need to drive them.
The Hummer is a dinosaur and I look forward to it's extinction, as for the people who drive them I think you'll find they're the same people who buy bits of tiger in the hope that it will give them a hard on.
We should pity them but such ignorance is impossible to condone.
I never saw a real life "hummer",but how you can have a vehicle that can only do 14 mpg seems crazy to me.

so 2.3 million morons still buy these things?
terminate now, not 2014!
what a joke....
Actually, jz, it's 2380. The scale is in thousands, not the labels on the data points.
No, it's "only" 2380, not 2,380,000. The scale is thousands, and the number at the side is 2.
One cannot help but be embarassed for these uneducated idiots living in their "bigger means I'm better" stupor.
I have a friend who bought one to tow his boat to the lake. It had the best gas milage of all of the vehicles that could pull his boat. It's a seven person small boat.
These numbers can't possible be units sold -- they have to be revenue dollars. Common sense will tell you that there's no way 2.3 million hummers were sold in the US by April of this year.
"I have a friend who bought one to tow his boat to the lake. It had the best gas mileage of all of the vehicles that could pull his boat. It's a seven person small boat"
A Chevy 1500 gets 20 mpg on the highway with a higher towing capacity than a Hummer.
I think your friend is justifying their purchase with half truths at best.

That said, how much has the housing problem had on car purchases? no more cash out refis means no more SUV's?
Everyone loves to pick on the Hummer. However, it is not the suv with the worst mileage. I guess for some reason we love to hate this car. What about the Mercedes 55amg or the Porsche cayenne? Lets go after the worst offenders or are those cars too cool to pick on !

GM never said that they'll end production by 2014, that was a purely speculative date for the production end of the H2 - not the H3, HX, H4, or whatever they choose to come out with next. Or, they'll sell the brand and someone else will come out with it. A brand as strong as HUMMER doesn't simply disappear.
A good use of these Hummers that are not selling would be to melt them down and use the metal for reinforcing the military Humvees in Iraq, so we wouldn't lose that handful of our fighting men and women that we lose every month to road bombs.
These should have never been made available as a civilian vehicle. It's not only totally unnecessary for driving in the city, it's a symbol of our overbloated consumption habits, the 'big fat America'
the Hummer is too strong a brand to vanish. some manufactures will buy it just for the heck. ptobabaly mahindra and mahindra in India. to be seen in the worldwide auto industry. they will postmortem the brand and us them to make better SUV. whay cant we run the hummer on alcohol. we can bring down the consumption of alcohol in the americas
shyam
Who is still buying 2000 Hummers per month?
The American Dream is conspicous consumption.
Remember folks, people who give ONE hoot about the environment are only about 50% of the US population, if that. Probably 10% give ZERO hoot, that's 30 million people.
Yes, Schwarzenegger should always have "popularized giant SUVs" preceding any claims to his eco-friendliness.
"A brand as strong as HUMMER doesn't simply disappear."
Of course they do. All the time throughout history, the mighty and powerful do fall.
the Hummer is a dinosaur. Unless they reinvent themselves as more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly, this car is a joke on wheels and hopefully it will be phased out way way way before 2014.
People cry about stupid hummers getting poor fuel miledge, what about the surbaban and tahao. but then again WHO CARES. If fuel prices come down people will revert back to fuel suckn battleship sized vehicles.
Oh you'll dig this. In Montana, I saw something that reminded me of the Monkey Wrench Gang-- someone spray-painted a Hummer in white lettering. Can you guess what they wrote?
CO2.
Mighty have fallen? Oh yeah.
people who drive Hummers are idiots only in that they are paying a lot to run the darn things. At the end of the day, cars are NOT the major contributor of greenhouse gases! Power plants are. Cars are insignificant. So really, Hummer owners are just stupid because they are paying so much to run a car which is hopelessly inefficient. I think its more a reflection on their intellect (or lack thereof) and their their ego (can wewiden the door please?) than the environment. They are the ones who live in a world of dillusion if they think anyone looks at them with envy! Maybe if it was a ferrari... but not a hummer!
Who are the 2300? Well, in my moderate-rent neighborhood, the size of cars is getting *bigger*. Why? 'Cause they're getting cheaper. And the opportunity to get the beefy vehicle you've been lusting for for two decades is a real draw for some people. Besides, with the arms race that is the American highway, lots of people still think they need a car this size just to keep the kids safe.
I have an H3. I get 20 mpg (much better than a lot of SUVs. I have friends with cars getting in the low 20s. My life was saved by my SUV in a wreck last year. I could get one of those cars that do a little better, take a 10K loss to save $1,000 a year. Maybe I should just trade it in for another SUV (probably worse gas mileage) so I won't be evil anymore.
I own a Hummer (H3, 5 cylinders) and I get 21mpg. I was talking to an owner of a hybrid Tahoe and he was bragging about getting 20 and a half mpg. Really, there are so many other vehicles that are doing a lot worse at the pumps than a hummer. I also drive a service van that is getting 13 mpg. Concider all of this
How an individual can buy a Hummer and consider him- or herself a moral being is beyond me. Because he or she is not. And don't blather on to me about market forces, free choice, etc. Because something is *legal* and available does *not* make it moral.
There is a special place in Hell for Hummer owners.
Amen.
