It's Official: Green is Sexy

Green Is Sexy T-shirt photoStudy Shows Green is Hot
A national survey conducted in the US by Kelton Research for GM shows some encouraging trends:

Fuel- efficient -- The new chick magnet? "Close to nine in 10 women (88 percent) say they’d rather chat up someone with the latest fuel-efficient car versus the latest sports car."

How to win friends and influence people. "Eighty percent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest model fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest model sports car."

Not green? That’s a fashion don’t. "More than four out of 10 (45 percent) 18-43 year-olds say it’s a fashion faux-pas nowadays to have a car that is not green or environmentally friendly."

While green would be worth doing even if not fashionable, the superficial popularity still can help in the same way that a superficial popularity for big SUVs helped sell a lot of them in the 90s. What must be avoided is a short-lived trend that dies out. What we want is something closer to big pivotal changes that are still with us even decades later (civil rights, etc).

Project roadway. "More than seven in 10 (73 percent) car buyers say if there were a reality TV show like “Project Runway” that was not about fashion design, but instead about designing the best-'looking fuel-efficient and emissions-free car, they’d definitely watch."

That's definitely a good sign for the launch of the Planet Green TV channel.

Say it enough times and it will be true! I am sure that's the mantra of all social engineers. And it works.

"What must be avoided is a short-lived trend that dies out. What we want is something closer to big pivotal changes that are still with us even decades later (civil rights, etc)."

The ecological mouse fart of the eighties is an example of what you are referring to.

This is a concern.

One of our most learned Biblical scholars told me, in 1989, that if I could imagine how spiritually dark our times are it would be fifty times greater than what I'd imagined.

That has concerned me for almost 20 years.

I know that "The Road Less Traveled" (e.g. Love) is what could turn this world around and in a more positive direction.

I don't believe such study. People tend to tell you what you want to hear. It's different from what they actually do.

Is it the green-ness or the technology of green that excites people and (evidently) stirs their loins? I think people are digging the technology, which happens to be green.

so how sexy is not driving at all? i bet it's even more sexy than driving. im going to go ahead and make that conclusion based on the facts presented here.

that would put myself (as well as most 'huggers) in the approximately 10 out of 10 range.

we're walking (and riding) sex god(ess)s here. nice work fellow sexy people.

I sit here in my ECO-boutique and this girl in a Prius parks across the street. She gets out and goes shopping, but not in my store. She goes in the mainstream boutique across the street. She is still buying trendy, cheaply made clothing (but paying a lot for them) However, she's got her Prius to show the world how green she is.

Yeah, I am waiting to see if the "look at me I am hot cause I bought a Prius" trend actually turns into somthing with credibility. So far, I don't see a translation from the Prius trend to a larger lifestyle change

If you consider that only a few years ago nobody talked about the environment in the media, that global warming wasn't on the map in the US and that hybrid and diesel cars weren't even available, and compare that to now, I'd say that it's pretty good.

Lots of naysayers here. I just want to know where I can get that tshirt - I love it!

jump to top Shay says:

I want that T-shirt!! Where can I get it? Too cute! Hopefully it's organic.

Kermit has got it made!

From a personal perspective, I get lots of positive feedback on my little VW diesel. I'm a volunteer driver for the loacl cancer program and have lots of strangers in the car. Seems like a good trend to me.

you can get the shirt here..for women only though:

If caring for the environment was sexy, people would be running in my door. Not so though. I must be uuuuuuugly! Maybe it is my 1997 Saturn . It gets 38 mpg but really is not a looker.

I am also waiting for the long-lasting changes that go beyond the fashion statement. Just like (the main-stream perception of) sexy people, sexy trends change sooner or later and are replaced by a more attractive, younger trend. What it will be nobody knows. Probably the opposite.

Right now it is popular to buy seemingly eco-friendly stuff or change some habits to "feel" green. When it turns out that those little things are not enough I fear people will just turn away rather than intensify their efforts. That is why I want people to begin with the big steps. Do the difficult changes when it is popular to do them and change your life-style before you run out of enthusiasm.

Maybe I should sell T-shirts rather than stickers.

Seriously though, no car can be said to be green (even the government of Norway acknowledges that http://www.terrapass.com/blog/posts/norway-outlaws) so how do those of us who bike, walk, and take public transit fare?

jump to top greenfyre says:

"green is sexy" = non sequitur

jump to top sam says:

Green definitely is hot. All of the furniture that I'm buying for our office is green and it looks great. All of the furniture has a unique story behind it and is far more interesting to talk about than normal non-green furniture. I just don't like it when people try to charge more for things that "green".

jump to top Peter Chee says:

um, sam? 99% of movement slogans are non sequiturs. did you mean oxymoron?

jump to top modchen says:

I wish people would stop focusing on trying to label this a movement or a trend. This is merely an evolution of our understanding of the world and our lives. It's not something you should do because it's cool, but rather because most things we can do are simple and you believe in a better future.

Our ancestors did everything in their powers to make life better for us, and they succeeded. An overwhelming majority were unaware of the harmful side-effects of their ingenuity, which has given our generation a deep purpose: to bring us full circle. To use our ingenuity to get us back to a sustainable planet! =D
