Collin and I were so excited by the student work on show at ICFF; Nick Demarco of the California College of the Arts produced a wonderful (and surprisingly comfortable) XS chair that can be filled with anything you have in excess- old clothes, magazines or in this case, garbage and bottles. The prototype is made of vinyl, but Nick says the production models will be made of a recycled plastic mesh.

Hit the jump to see a video of Nick describing the chair, a close up of all the garbage inside it, and another video of Professor Corey Jones describing the project.

CCA Professor Corey Jones told us that it was part of a project to "bring sustainable design to Wal-Mart", and describes a few of the other projects.

For the record, the final material will not be recycled plastic. There are very few options currently available for recycled sheet plastic that have the structural properties of vinyl, as plastic degenerates after each cycle of re-processing. The material will be recyclable, but it is first generation plastic.

PS - It's a Capitol M in DeMarco. =)

what happens if the material rips? is this just a glorified trash bag?

also, try not to put anything "uncomfortable" in the seat portions...it might look cool, but I'd rather not sit on sticks from the yard or that pair of scissors with the broken handle!

Uh, just don't stick sharp objects in it and you won't have a problem. :)

If the bag tears, get creative and find a way to patch it. That's what we used to do with things that got torn (remember big daisy patches on your jeans)?

I think its wonderful and ironic that it will be sold at Walmart.
