Empire State Building to glow green on May 8th in honor of Rainforest Foundation Fund Carnegie Hall Benefit and Rainforest Awareness Month 2008!

It's Rainforest Awareness Month and Jessica is kickin' it telling you about her trip to the Brazilian Amazon and interviewing John Nevado, President of Nevado Roses Ecuador just in time for Mother's Day (*wink* pamper mom and mama earth with our gift guide).

The star-studded Rainforest Foundation Fund Benefit Concert & Gala is tomorrow night and if you weren't fortunate enough to bid your way into winning exclusive access to the event, there is still time to purchase Gala and concert tickets. Billy Joel, James Taylor, Sting, Brian Wilson, Chris Botti, Feist, celebrated French operatic tenor Roberto Alagna, cellist Natalie Clein plus special musical family members including Alexa Ray Joel, CoCo Sumner, Ben Taylor, Sally Taylor, along with many more special guests will perform one night only on behalf of the Rainforest Foundation Fund.

To celebrate the achievements of The Rainforest Foundation Fund and to raise awareness of its mission, Mayor Bloomberg's office has issued a proclamation declaring the month of May "Rainforest Awareness Month," while Crate and Barrel's Madison Avenue store windows have been decorated to reflect inspiring success stories from the world's rainforests. Also, the Empire State Building will glow green in tribute on the evening of the benefit. The makers of Smart Car have donated the Passion Cabriolet, autographed by all of this year's participating artists -- one of the many unique featured items offered in the evening's live auction.

Additional Auction Highlights Can Be Found Here.

If you want to show lots of love for the rainforest, Gala tickets are still available for purchase. Also, concert-only tickets from $400-$150 are available through Carnegie Hall Box Office: 212-247-7800

Hooray for the awareness and everything, but the Rainforest Foundation has been rated -zero- out of five stars by Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities' efficacy. Basically, that means the Rainforest Foundation is in the bottom 2% of charities examined in terms of actually providing funding for their stated causes. Feel free to contribute if you want the organization to fritter away a fair chunk of your cash before it actually goes to help the cause.

I actually heard that Sting's rainforest charity has been rated one of the worst charities - and that the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance has voiced concerns about their financial accountability. At their last event less than half of the money was donated to the rainforest.. I hope it's not true.

I would love to go to this but can't afford it:( You guys should see if they'll donate tickets to your site that you can give away as a contest or something?

*Completely off-topic*

I really wish "green foundations" would stop feeling compelled to use the typeface Papyrus to communicate how in touch they are with the earth. It's the most awkwardly proportioned and poorly drawn typeface you could choose.

I'd rather see comic sans.

bwj i totally agree
they probably spent thousands on graphic design and they got papyrus?
Apple Garamond has a down to earth yet quirky feel.

I'd be warier of Charity Navigator then the Rainforest Foundation. They are making a buisness out of telling people where to donate their money. It should be a personal choice and you should care enough about the cause to do the research yourself before shelling out the bucks.

Maybe Sting will walk to the event from his new $23 million house in Manhattan. Is there any celebrity besides Ed Begley who I can take seriously regarding environmental commitment? Sting has seven houses, one of them a castle. His carbon footprint must be the size of a hundred average people when you figure in private jets, helicopter, servants, multiple cars, multiple houses, tours, etc. All that is left is to hold a benefit concert in Brazil on a clearcut field.

As for accountability, I wonder if this benefit will even raise enough money to pay for the event itself. Looks like a party for rich people to feel better about themselves and the damage they cause through their personal excess.

Yeah, yeah, call me cynical. I'll stick with Ed.
