Carbon Calculator for Online Shopping Measures Footprint of E-Commerce

We recently wrote about how difficult is for consumers to know which is better: saving gas by purchasing items online; or, reducing one's greenhouse gas "footprint" by avoiding potentially inefficient shipping procedures (especially with reference to wasted packaging and the prevalence of air freight and partial-load deliveries).
In that post - Buying Green Online - Gasoline Saver Or Climate Bigfoot? - we suggested how useful it would be if, when choosing a shipping method, a carbon footprint estimate could be presented on the computer "checkout" screen, representing the GHG emissions associated with actual route(s) and shipping method choices. The general idea being to help consumers make a quantitative, rational decision between the several ways to 'green one's footprint' (as pictured).
As things stand, now, on Amazon, or with any other online store for that matter, evaluating that tradeoff is like putting a micrometer on a fog bank.
Along comes TerrPass, with exactly the kind of service we were thinking of!

So, after options are assessed, one can decide on some rational basis, whether to buy the lower footprint ticket, or not - perhaps compensating the less green choice with an offset purchase. Now that's cool.
There's no reason Amazon and every other online seller of goods and services could not do the same. It's all about empowering the free market to protect the planet.
And, it does not have to stop there. Environmentally aware companies have assessed the carbon footprint of their supply chains and can tell us of their per product GHG footprint "Cradle to Gate." Add that to the online footprint estimation approach perfected by TerraPass and partner, which covers the factory gate downstream, to the consumer, and you have the whole deal.

Eco Interactive offers Carbon Neutral Vacations to Costa Rica. Their program is unique in that Eco Interactive allows clients to plan their own trees in the Costa Rica rainforest to offset the carbon footprint from their vacation.
Golly, Terra pass tells you how much carbon you need to offset. What a coincidence that they also SELL carbon "credits." Kind of like the oil companies telling you to change your oil every 3,000 miles.
Greenwash it all you want, shopping (traveling, etc.) is not an environmentally sensitive hobby, unless your magic carbon credits miraculously undo the harm you created filling your empty soul with material stuff and senseless travel.

No one is required to buy online anything. But they do, in great numbers, and at huge cumulative expense, without much information about environmental consequence. My point was simply to seek a way to better inform the buyers' discretion, using the TerraPass system as an example for how that might be accomplished.
The post was not intended to be an ad for them, although I still think they are offering a valuable service with this innovation.
Ugh, here we go again. Can we stop throwing out numbers without statistically normalizing them?
The author uses:

..meaning WHAT? Are they all using Boeing 777s for this if so why does one burn more than the other, what type of plane? How new are the planes (new Airbus beats out an old Boeing in fuel efficiency, etc)?
I have long been fighting the green fight, but using random numbers only weakens our arguement and opens up to attack.
Why not restate that as "it takes USAir X amount of energy to transport Z lbs of shipment with a 767, etc"
That would help the reader better understand the impact.

it would also seem to me that the number of passengers per flight would also affect each individual carbon footprint. I find it hard to believe you can accurately predict this before the actual flight.

You will find that the Terrapass calculator does indeed take into effect a mass of variables such as passenger load factors, aircraft type, age of aircraft, and more. In the article it mentions that the TerraPass partnered with TRX Travel Analytics for their calculator, if you head over to http://carbon.trx.com you can see the level of information that is being provided...Lots..
In all honesty it is likely that Terrapass chose not to present all of these options to the end user so as not to overwhelm them as lets face it, how many average Joe's would know what the radiative forces indexing is? In some respect this could also hurt as without letting them see the information how are they meant to become more knowledgeable about the factors that contribute to the emissions.....
Just my 2 cents...
