Magic Wheel: Cross Between Skateboard, Unicycle and Rollerblades

by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 05.13.08
Cars & Transportation

The wheel most likely was 'invented' in ancient Mesopotamia in the 4th millennium BC, yet we're still finding new ways to use it. The Magic Wheel is... Well, just watch the video. It says it all. "freakin sweet" would definitely be appropriate here

The $349 price tag is rather steep. Exchange rates suck.

jump to top Spike says:

Shipping is quite steep, too. ($349 x 1unit + $445
shipping fee)

I hate to rain on this parade, but whoever invented this has a basic lack of understanding of male anatomy.

The diameter of that wheel is uncomfortably close to the inseam length of the people pictured riding it. Which probably explains why none of the action shots involve a bump or a dropoff.

Might a recommend 650c wheels for version 2? Or maybe even something smaller.

Great , high speed heelies for adults!

Nice idea - more compact and flexible than a bike. Do like the idea of being able to pick it up easily and not have to strap boots on.

Doesn't look spectacularly safe (or necessarily that easy to use, judging from the girl that fell off!). Also where are users going to use it? In the middle of the road with cars and buses? Or on pavements where they can flatten people (especially whilst on a mobile phone)?

jump to top George [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

I think I will just stick to my trusty skateboard.

Just coming off seeing the premier of a wonderful film about the evolution of NYC skateboarding in the 70's-90's (Deathbowl to Downtown), this makes me gut laugh.

Can I list the ways that this is utterly retarded?

First, its great for peg-leg pirates, so don't say I'm just a hater. :D

Second, the crotch-bang potential is ripe for funny video time. :D

Third, I like the way the guy in the video is like "stupid girl" and rides off when she obviously can't keep up and sits down alone on the stump. :D

Fourth, every single gizmo like this always has some dumb ass teens they pay to get at least a little bit of air somehow. Be it in the pipe, or just wherever. Since there was not one shot of air in this video, you just know its got to suck. :D

Fifth, ITS RETARDED. :D

Great concept... horribly overpriced.... you can make your own for pretty cheap...

jump to top Elepski says:

Annoying song though. Sheesh. And I also thought it was funny how he just leaves the chick on the log.

jump to top Dallas says:

Looks like a lot of fun but I was surprised they didn't show everyone wearing helmets and other safety gear.

jump to top Randilin says:

This looks really cool and will probably have knock-offs and home-made solutions on instructables and other sites soon... but I can't help but marvel at the general lack of safety or common sense on the part of the video producers... splitting lanes, running lights, weaving between pedestrians, talking on cell phones... all the worst aspects of both auto and bike riders in one smaller package.

jump to top Legodragonxp [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

does it need the small rear wheel? i would think if the riders weight is on the little platform, it would stay at the lowest part and the rear wheel may not be needed

jump to top Andy says:

Ungainly and goofy looking. Predicted sales: 20 units.

Stick to skateboarding.

jump to top brennan says:

interesting... reminds me of southpark... >

jump to top thespyofcharles [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Did anyone else notice that everyone in this video was wheeling around on flat terrain? I'm thinking that going up a hill on this thing would be very difficult, akin to a skateboard. Although it looks like you could always pick it up with one hand and walk.

jump to top Dave says:

I read the FAQ on their website and the claim is the beast has no brakes because "it works better without them". I can see this because it looks like you'd taste pavement instantly if you braked the main wheel. But really, who ever needs to slow down to avoid trouble? These seem like a great vehicle for the "chicks dig scars" generation, but I'll stick with my bicycle thank you oh so very much.

jump to top Dave Wiley says:

i love the businessman talking on his cell phone and the couple holding hands. ha!

jump to top megoneill says:

Ah, beautiful Budapest, home to a very inventive people.

jump to top gmoke says:

Was it just me or was this video sped up? I'd like to see how fast they are going with a video at normal pace.

Also, it looks like it is not ambidexterous. Is this correct?

That said, I'm all for a variety of ways to solve problems, and this is one way to solve the 'transportation' problem (on paved, flat surfaces...) The more innovation the better!

jump to top michi says:

a skateboard is nice, but not so much fun on the cracky sidewalks by my house. this thing looks like it'll probably handle uneven ground better and is a cushier ride.

what i'm wondering is, if its based on a regular bike hub, you could plop in a motorized hub and carry a small battery pack.

jump to top chopper says:

Looks like it's suitable for the conditions shown in the video but those conditions are also a sliver of where other people live. How does it handle on hillls. Ie: Touring bicycles are great bicycles... on ashphalt.
