Not really knowing anything about cork or landfills, wouldn't it be good to have some biodegradable material in a landfill? Wouldn't this (or any bio-degradable) material speed up the process of deteriorating the other less bio-degradable material? I've often wondered if landfills get TOO "dry" since so much biodegradable material is now recycled.
Why would you ever BUY any kind of cardboard boxes (except possibly very specialized ones like wardrobe boxes), even if they are "gently used"? People are always giving away free boxes on Freecycle and Craigslist, and you can also go to a liquor store/bookstore/just about any kind of retail store and get their extras too.
