Dr. Bronner's Sues "Organic" Cosmetics Companies
by Jasmin Malik Chua, Jersey City, USA on 05. 1.08

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps filed a lawsuit on Monday accusing several popular cosmetic manufacturers of deceptive marketing. Filed in San Francisco Superior Court, the lawsuit targets brands such as Estee Lauder, Kiss My Face, Hain Celestial, and Stella McCartney America, several of which are members of OASIS, a new but controversial organic beauty label.
In the lawsuit, the good doctor charges the firms of false advertising by labeling their lotions and soaps "organic," even though they contain relatively little organic material, comprise synthetic chemicals, and use petrochemicals in processing.
"This is the corrosive marketing of the cosmetics industry that hollowed out the meaning of 'natural' and now is doing the same with 'organic'," David Bronner, president of the 60-year-old company, tells the San Francisco Chronicle. ::San Francisco Chronicle

Good for them. This is why I like Dr Bronner's. They actually give a damn about the products they sell, the people who buy them, and the people who make them. They have been commenting for years on the sad state of "organic" and "natural" body products and cosmetics. I am pleased to see them take this step in trying to make the terms actually mean something.
I am pleased to see Kiss My Face on the list of companies targeted. So many of their products are loaded with the same garbage the mainstream cosmetic companies use. I used to use their Olive and Aloe lotion until they reformulated it and added Propylene Glycol. Propylene Glycol makes me itchy.
I'm not impressed with Kiss My Face, either. That company is little more than greenwash and list their ingredients as loosely and vaguely as they are allowed.
I will be switching from my Kiss My Face bar soap (which leaves coloring out of the ingredients list) to another more upfront brand, perhaps even Dr. Bronner's.
FWIW, the "Good Doctor" (Emanuel H. Bronner) died in 1997. David Bronner, named in the article, is actually Dr. Bronner's grandson. He took control of the company in 1998.
Good on 'em!
Dr Bronner's soaps have been a staple in our house for decades now... would not ever want to buy anything else.... it is THAT good!
I am tired of people who use terms irresponsibly... if you load your product with toxic crap and call it "organic" than dishonesty and obfuscation are your intent.
Hope Bronner's wins their suit.
Yes indeed, and the entirely incoherent things written on the sides of their bottles just add to their endearingness. I've just got into Dr Bronner and am finding it completely useful for just about anything I want to clean (me, my teeth, the plates - though I'm finding it odd having the latter smelling faintly of lavender).
The chemicals those companies used in organic personal products is bologna. I enjoy Dr. Bronner's soaps... but I do have to say that Hain-Celestial's "Soy Dream" ice cream is delicious and does not contain any synthetic ingredients or petrochemicals. So boycott their personal care but keep buying their vegan ice cream :P
It is about time that we stand up to companies that are "green washing" themselves.
Thanks Doctor - You ROCK!
Dang, I just bought some Kiss My Face shaving cream! And it works so nice too and doesn't come in an unrecyclable aerosol can. Ugh :(. Guess I'll re-read the ingredients list closer when I get home.
brilliant, i'm sick of deceptive marketing. a friend had a bottle of 'organic' shampoo that had 11 references on the bottle to it being organic (many in bold) - the ingredients list reveals fairly okay stuff however, just ONE organic ingredient, lavender oil - the smallest ingredient. sue all lies!!!
Hooray! The people at Dr. Bronners are my heroes!!! I get so confused trying to understand how I can buy a product advertised to be natural or organic, only to find out it is nasty crap when I get home to research the ingredients. Dr. Bronner please make more products for dental hygiene and deoderant.....
Is there a list somewhere of the companies they AREN'T suing? I'd like to find more like Dr. Bronner's stuff because while I like it for my hair, my wife does not. Just looking for alternatives :)
Why is everyone assuming the companies they are suing really are "guilty"?

All you have to do in most cases is read the label...they're guilty.
A bit two faced on the part of Dr Bronner since they use Sodium Hydroxide / Potassium hydroxde to saponify their soaps. It's a marketing ploy.
This is nothing more than a media spectacle designed to coerce and instill the same type of fear that so permeates this culture. Don't think for a second that Dr. Bronner's gives a rats butt about you personally.. it's all about a shrinking market share and a leftover war chest.
Karma's a bitch and watch her when she bites the Bronner family back!
My question is related this post
