In hopes of increasing ridership, the city of San Francisco is testing a new form of cutting-edge public transport known as the Connected Bus, a hybrid vehicle offering high-speed Internet access and live updates about delays. Would you be more likely to take it?

it depends on if it goes where i need to go. I'd take the old buses that we have here if they went from my house to my work without having to transfer two times. It's hard to justify taking the bus when it takes an hour when driving only takes 12-15 minutes. Hybrid engine and internet service would be nice, but it won't overcome infrequent service and poorly layed out routes.

Unfortunately, taking a bus/train in my line of work is just completely impractical. That being said I do use the train for leisure on the weekends so this bus would be a boon.

I would take the bus if it went where I want, when I want. And avoiding ex-cons who like to tell me why they were in prison would be a bonus too.
Actually, the bus system here isn't terrible, but it is rarely an easy thing to do. When I was in london, the bus system was spectacularly easy to use and went nearly everywhere I wanted.
...but seriously, at least 50% of the time I have been on a bus, someone near me decided to tell me about their recent release from prison...

I'd take the bus if it went where I wanted to go, to/from work, at a reasonable schedule. Even plus or minus 20-30 mins of my work schedule would be OK. I don't need it to have wifi or dvd players.
In more rural type areas, public transit just does not exist really.

If I were single, and especially if we didn't have kids, it would be a lot easier to be green.

There's a bus line that runs from a couple blocks from my house out to a few hundred yards from my job and back, at the time I need to get to work. I'd take it even if it didn't offer WiFi. Hop on the bus, flash my pass, take a seat and veg out before work. Sounds great.

But since I've got a wife who might need me at home without notice, and since I've got to take our daughter to day care every day, there's no way I can take the bus unless it ran every five minutes.

And I can't bike because my wife won't let me take the baby along such a busy road, and because it would take me twice as long to get home. And I can't even ride my 85 mpg scooter because of the baby.

So I'm driving my xA, getting about 35 mpg, but still in a car. And every time Treehugger posts something about the wonders of non-car commuting, I feel guilty because I've got my hands tied.

Maybe I should get divorced so I could take the bus. Would that be Treehugger?

It wouldn't change anything for me, because I only ever walk. I've taken the bus for a grand total of ten minutes since august.

jump to top Magnulus says:

I'd love to take the bus, but with current routes, I'd have to drive two miles to the nearest bus stop in my town, ride to the city, transfer to another bus downtown, and walk half a mile through a proven dangerous neighborhood to my office, then repeat in reverse at day's end. It's just too much hassle as is.

Bike bike bike!!!

jump to top Tony says:

The bus routes in my community are inadequate unless you are lucky enough to be going somewhere along one of the routes. I bike to work when weather permits, and internet on the bus isn't going to change that.

jump to top Craig says:

I live out in the woods,so it would take me 10 minutes by car to get to a bus.I would need a place to put my car when i catch the bus.Sometimes i wish i could get a bus. I get tired of driving(in general). I drive 6 to 7 days a week and try to set up things to do after work on the weekend when there is no school.

jump to top Judie says:

I do take the bus. However, I'm in Denver, Co. RTD is our bus system here and it's ok. But there are many more places to get better efficiency from. For instance; How about putting the bus stop BEFORE an intersection so the bus does not block traffic while it's stopped. Also, just a thought, but who is the genius that put together the online trip planner? I can put in my home address in Westminster and my destination in Boulder and trip planner suggests I should take 3 buses to get to work in 2.5 hours when one will do it in 45 minutes! Also, what's with those Interline Buses? I see at least 4 everyday that are traveling from Denver to Boulder empty! I know that it still takes fuel to move about 28 miles. What a complete waste, now they want to put in a light rail from Denver to Boulder, anybody look at the route? Very bad neighborhood in Westminster for the midway station. Talk about prisoners! More like drug and gangland. And the destination in Boulder is displacing a car dealership by force! Just not right.
