Omlet Expands: The New Eglu Cube
by Sami Grover, Carrboro, NC, USA on 04. 7.08

The Eglu, aka “the iPod of hen houses”, first graced our pages back in 2004, and it also featured in our round up of most huggable stories in 2006. However, it seems that Omlet, the makers of this revolutionary hen house, have been busy since we last looked, having now released the Eglu Cube, a new design that houses up to 10 chickens (the original Eglu could only hold 4):
The new eglu cube is the ideal way to keep up to 10 chickens in a town or country garden. It is based on the same revolutionary technology as the original eglu with slide out dropping trays, hose clean surfaces, twin walled insulated, no maintenance and our No Foxes Allowed protection. The eglu cube makes is easy to keep a larger number of hens in your garden and leaves you with more time to enjoy the pleasures of owning chickens.
At nearly £700 (US$1400), the Eglu Cube certainly doesn’t come cheap – but it does seem to be attracting a whole new demographic to the art of chicken keeping, which can only be a good thing. Would-be chicken keepers in the US may have to content themselves with the regular Eglu for now, as there’s no sign of the Eglu Cube on Omlet USA’s website. Maybe American chickens aren’t as fond of over-sized houses as their British counterparts… now that would be a cultural turn up for the books.
