VBS.tv Sails Out to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 04.11.08
Culture & Celebrity (audio video)

Great Pacific Garbage Patch VBS.tv

It all started with a piece in the Independent in February about a trash vortex in the ocean, now known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It has been getting lots of coverage on the internet lately, including on TreeHugger: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: "Out of Sight, Out of Mind"

VBS.tv had to see it with their own eyes, so they sailed for two days in the Pacific before reaching their destination. But it wasn't like they expected: "What people don’t get is that it’s not really a patch and it’s not really an island, both of which you might be able to contain and control. No, what we found is much worse. It’s like a gigantic toxic stew and it’s a big big problem that we need to pay attention to now."

Warning: There's some swearing in the videos.

So far, 3 out of 12 episodes are available.

One, Two, Three.

The host, Thomas Morton, will be on CNN Headline News to discuss Toxic: Garbage Island: April 12th & 13th @ 7:30pm, 9:30pm and 12:30am if you find your self flipping through the channels.

yikes. NO GOOD!
oddly enough, i bought my re-usable, non-recyclable polycarbonate water bottle at whole foods. booo.

jump to top Blue says:

Just a warning - the video stops every 6 seconds or so to buffer.

The folks on the video show their obvious education with the (almost insane) use of the "F" word. NY City College alumi?

We may have been better served with less preaching and more evidence...though these is pleanty in the parts I suffered through.

BTW, I have a high speed connection.

jump to top Don says:

This would be a great educational resource, if only the host could clean up their language a little.

I'm with Brad above. I would love for my kids to see this but not with the language (what, you can't edit that out? Or does it make it more authentic if you cuss? get over that). I'm no prude but it's distracting for younger kids whose swearing skills are not as developed.

jump to top paul [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

These guys got off their backsides and went out to film this. They're struck by some incredible circumstances and they cuss. I, for one, am not going to get upset if that bothers the sensibilities of parents who cocoon their kids in a world where seeing a breast or hearing an expletive kills the message for them. In fact, it has the potential to make the whole situation more real.

Any kid over the age of about 9 swears more than that when you're not around. And these videos would instill hopeless despair in any kid younger than that. I know they've instilled nearly hopeless despair in me, and I'm not a kid anymore. When you see things like this, it becomes pretty clear that human civilization is headed for a catastrophic collapse, and we can't buy our way out of it. Even if the billion people in the first world could suddenly change our ways (we won't), there are two billion people in China and India eager to take our place and make the same mistakes. Eventually the system is going to say enough, and a few billion people will starve to death.

jump to top Scott says:

I haven't bought a plastic bottle in 7 years. And take my own containers to the grocery story. Thats just a small step on the road to clean this mess up. As a windsurfer I see this mess all the time and it very very disheartening.

jump to top surfcam says:

NBC News already did a piece on this a week or so ago. I think the filmmakers here did a really good job of editing this together. The music and the cinematography if you will is pretty good. I wish they would have included more raw data about the full extent to which this damages the environment. Like when they were talking about the potentially cancer causing chemical that everyone in the industrialized world has been exposed to. Or him saying that there is probably a minimum of 100 million tons of plastic in the ocean. As for their choice of language I think it was totally funny. People curse. Plain and simple. If you don't like then fuck off.

jump to top omega.proteus [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

I am excited to see more of these episodes. I hope they get a little more in-depth as the program progresses.

As far as the swearing is concerned, I DO think it makes it more authentic. These are people's genuine reactions to the garbage patch, not sanitized scripted versions. It will be easy to make a "bleeped-out" version for children of concerned parents.

jump to top fullerenedream says:

Working for a school district, I'd love to use this, but it isn't possible with the language. Good video, though.

jump to top Brandon says:

+1 for an awesome find. I'm disgusted at what they've found.

-1 for the guy in glasses. He distracted me from the content.

jump to top Justin W says:

I am trying to find a way to collect all this plastic waste and compress them into building blocks for construction. Hopefully just the heat generated by the compression will fuse the plastics together. Anyone who can further this idea along, please do so. It could even become an industry for third world countries despoiled by our plastics.

jump to top Guy says:

At least 8 segments are online.

The occasional, but gratuitous, vulgarity is unfortunate - it's so very unprofessional and discredits an otherwise interesting program. (:-(

jump to top Doug G says:

My husband and I were talking about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, as we often do.
We came to a beautiful realization. The Earth has made it so easy for us to clean it up, by sweeping into a neat Texas sized pile.
The Earth really is giving us every opportunity to clean up the mess we've made.
It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

Thanks,
Ebba

jump to top Ebba says:

I just finished watching parts 1-8 of 12 and I didn't care much for this 'so hip it hurts' attitude...not to mention, the swearing. Was that really necessary? In all the years Jacques Cousteau and his crew were on the air, did they swear? No, they did not and they brought attention to the plight of the oceans and the various creatures that live there. There is such a thing as CLASS, you know...and a little goes a long way.

jump to top Sandie says:

I love this. We would always hear about this but never saw the real proof. Finally we have it!!!!!!

Spread the word people.

jump to top utaw says:

I can't wait fo all of you who have problems with these videos to make your own "clean" ones.
The earth is literally being choked to death and your concern is some potty language??

jump to top Anonymous says:

Yawwn. If some naughty words and 'cool' bother you then we are definitely doomed.

These folks are telling the story, and they are telling it their way. Fair enough i say. I'm sure some sanitised coverage of the issue will be available to mainstream viewers at some point soon ... maybe you could have a go?

Anyway, i digress. I found it compelling, and concerning. The idea of a bunch of foul-mouthed urban hipsters setting sail into the Pacific on an environmental fact-finding mission will probably resonate with a large audience.

jump to top brad says:

I read that this area is the size of Texas and contains approximately 46,000 pounds of waste per square mile. I'd be cussing too if I were sailing through that. In fact, I wasn't there and I'm mad as hell. Just look around you and see how much effort is spent cleaning up this junk from our roadsides, neighborhoods and parks. We clean up bags every week just from the parking lot of our cafe. Bottled water is gone from our cafe after watching this. The discussion starts now. What are you doing?

jump to top Jack says:

I'm sorry, but if your intent was to raise awareness of this problem and more to the point, to clean up the problem, then you should realize that with every polluted word that comes out of your mouth, that is equal to another year that this garbage will continue to float.
You obviously had no clue how many millions of people will never see this because of your poor choice of words.
I understand being passionate about the problem, but wake up!
Dude, and everyone else! It's going to cost money to clean it up! People with money to give DO NOT talk like that, and even more importantly, do not wish to be seen to associate with people that talk like that.

jump to top Charter Member says:

Thank you for bringing this to light. Sorry to read that people are distracted by the authentic language. I like that idea about utilizing the material for building. I have been hatching a plan for creating a floating island but need a philanthropist to share the dream/nightmare. We won't know if we can clean it up til we try various methods of capture, containment, and utilization. I am up for the mission; I've been working as a lighthouse keeper and spend hours cleaning up the plastics and styrofoams off the beautiful beaches of British Columbia. It is a thankless job but as someone once wrote, "Do good by stealth and blush to call it fame..."

Carry on and may your God provide you inspiration if you have one. If not you'll just have to inspire yourself the new-fashioned, existential way.

im not sure what blue was talking about because the videos worked fine for me so maybe you should check your connection...

and i wish people would look past how people talk and listen more to the content of what theyre saying.

jump to top Jess says:

As a young, cool (at least I'd like to think so) kid I'd thought that I could perhaps add to this conversation. I agree that the point of this video is to address the issue and that the reporting may be secondary to the cause. However, I think there's something to be said about how the message is conveyed which is why the language in this video is so hotly discussed on here.

The only thing I'd like to offer is that cursing used here is what's most effective and direct to the younger generations, who are ultimately the ones who will be responsible for cleaning up this mess. As much as parents and educators want kids to have "class" and use a wider vocabulary to express their emotions, it's just not the way we communicate and dialogue. Look at rap/rock/pop music. The lyrics are FAR worse than anything in this video yet there are millions of dollars invested, millions of fans worldwide, and continues to stay relevant/popular.

Personally, this is one of the most compelling report that appeals to both me and my peers. This is the type of thing that says to kids "its not just scientists (adults or "grown ups") that are telling you to be scared- it's also that fucking kid you saw at the party last night!"
