BYD, China's biggest battery maker, isn't wasting any time carving its niche in the new world of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. It all started with the F6DM plug-in hybrid sedan, followed by the smaller and less expensive F3DM plug-in hybrid compact car.
Now BYD has introduced its E6 electric car at the Beijing International Auto Show. It takes the shape of a crossover, or MPV, and will be built on on the F6's platform (same as the F6DM, which could be sold in Europe by 2010).

BYD E6 Electric Vehicle Specifications
So far, all we know is that the E6 will be a 5 seater with an acceleration of 0 to 100 kph of around 10 seconds. Top speed should be top speed of 160 kph (100 mph), and the battery pack, which is located under the rear passenger seats, will be based on BYD's own lithium-ion iron phosphate technology. Range per charge is expected to be 300 km (186 miles).
But most impressive of all:
"BYD projected the battery had a life of 2,000 cycles, for a lifetime range of about 600,000 km (373,000 miles)"
Wow! Even if thats just half true, it's still pretty good.

Charging of the battery will take the night with 220V, but the E6 electric car can also take a fast charge that can bring the battery to 80% SOC in about 15 minutes.
BYD says that it could start producing the E6 within two years. Another one to follow.

Every country in the world "gets it" but the U.S.
Looks great! Top speed of 100 mph would be great. I just put together a list of electric cars a couple nights ago but sadly most were still low speed vehicles. Distance and speed are what it's all about and, naturally, are the big challenges to conquer.
The list is here:

Here's to hoping it will make it to the US in that time frame! (And then I'll hope that it makes it east of the Rocky Mountains in my lifetime.)
Note that the 0-100 km/h time is GREATER THAN 9.2 seconds. They have the length of the car down to the last mm. I'm sure there's no variation in that number.
Useful top speeds mean that I could actually drive it to work, if those numbers are anywhere near valid.
it seems difficult to near impossible for me to get rid of my car and I can't afford anything more eco friendly. I'm a student that lives 10 miles away from school and that's the only option I have till I get out in a year. BUT, I am definitely dreaming of the day when I can live and work closer together and use an electric car to do any traveling I can't do by bike. Someday hopefully soon.
Mark says:
"I can't afford anything more eco friendly."
of course you can't.
The gas price is going up in a very fast pace. Isn't it a good idea to rethink the eletric car? The BYD e6 seems attractive enough and the only problem is we don't see much detail so far.
Most countries now are seeing the writing on the wall and encouraging citizens to opt for EVs even going so far as to offer subsidies for purchase; case in point Spain and India. With any luck more countries will go down that road, because only with government support that a movement really gain momentum.
A lot of good an electric car will do China when they generate all of their electricity by burning coal.
What car..?
Oh...I see it, behind the cute model : )
Im sticking to my gas car & public trans until a foreign electric car is available.
US electrics, if they ever become available, will no doubt be inferior and much more subject to the will of the domestic oil companies.
US auto companies should do the world a favor and go out of business, which to their credit they are already doing.
I see a future of electric cars with everyone having solar, wind power at home. The economy is in the crapper, maybe investing 1.5 trillion in renewable energy instead of war might be a place to start!
100 kpm is 62 mph. Still a fine speed for 90% of everything a car does.
Of course, the big hurdle is the Highway Safety Institute. They block the majority of efficient cars built around the world from being sold here.
We need to adopt cars approved by Canada without a separate evaluation process. They use our rules, so it would allow us immediate access to dozens of 40+ mpg cars without undue costs to auto manufacturers.
Oh, whoops. Guess Detroit won't let that happen any time soon.
We already have at least one US made electric car in production, an other looking to launch in about a year, and several others are being developed. Al Gore & Bush both say there is global warming. So saying the USA does not get it does not ring true.
Also several evil corporations are producing electric motorcycles.
Hey tree bark, they didn't claim 100 kpm (whatever a kpm is) they claimed 160 kph which according to them is about 100 mph.
The U.S. is becoming a third world country, its being left behind while the rest of the world is advancing into the future!
First impression .. Very cute model.
All the stats are great. Top speed is a bit overdone, I'd be happy with a bit less than 160km/h. Acceleration to highway speed in 10 seconds is great. Very average performance.
The one missing number /// $$$$$$$ price????????? how much will this cost??????
If it can be made and sold for under $30,000 then it will be a success. If it prices under $20,000 then get these in production at seriously high quantity ...
how are you
by
kumar
mark that 0-100 kph is FROM 9.2 sec.
It will be higher if MORE weight is added (equipment, people, etc.
This car will cost about 20K USD, my bet will be that it will be slightly more costly in the USA, perhaps another 5-10K to meet safety requirements, insurance, etc.
The BIg 3 auto companies in the USA cannot match the production cost in China, plus the battery is propriety to BYD.
I would add a robot (in the garage) that will connect the car automatically to allow owners to hassle of physically plug the socket in
Looks like China has a winner here
Sounds great! Have we learned anything lately about China? Like.......are they still using lead base paint?????? I think we need to answer this question before we start buying these cars like hot cakes!!
John
Too good to be true!!!
But Warren Buffet has 10% of BYDauto stock.
That means the company has big potential.
Americans don't get it! Very naive people that think their elected political whores and the high level Corporate idiots are working for the good of Amerika. Here is how it works: The Big Oil guys who have trillions upon trillions of future revenue beneath the ground (yep, that $4.50/gal was engineered) and will do anything to protect this. They buddy-buddy with the automotive high level guys who end up getting lots of $$$ to eventually go into the "decision" meetings to "squash" the idea as not being feasible. Then you have Boy Bush and other idiots talking "Hydrogen." The only reason they want that is because there is no present infrastructure (like electricity); so they can tax to build, do the abhorrent cost overruns and crooked construction deals to bring a cost prohibitive technology to be forced upon us. It's all a mirage due to greed! It is time to wake up Amerika. Go watch Who Killed The Electric Car? on Google Video and then get involved to recall these criminal politicians that have ruined our nation. Get involved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing, isn't it? India must go for a chinese collaboration and start manufacturing this Car in
India. I can see very good future for this car
in India.

"Alot of good an electric car will do China when they produce all of their electricity by burning coal."
That's a good point. Wouldn't be any good for the environment that way. They'd have to switch to another method to produce electricity which is doubtful and unlikely.
I am an asian and this car brings pride to our country
Hope the world would be more eco-friendly if all the people use pure electrical cars,
$22,000 each
According to the latest news,"For now, BYD will focus on China's domestic market. Priced at about $22,000 each, Wang impressed investor Warren Buffett. In September, one of Buffet's companies purchased a 10 percent stake in BYD for $230 million."

Actually the point made several times about electric cars being a waste because the majority of China's electricity comes from coal is not true. One has to consider many concepts in chemisty, electrical and mechanical engineering to understand the real advantages of electric cars. The fundamental concept is that a relatively small internal combustion engine can never match the efficiency of a large, Rankine-cycle coal plant. Of course one must consider the efficiency losses in the transmission (significant for the internal combustion auto), losses in the motors for the electric vehicle (small), transmission line losses (small, electric vehicle) and losses in the fuel refining process, too, but I have done the calculations and electric keeps a strong lead. The other fundamental concept is "distributed pollution" versus "centralized pollution." Most people do not realize that coal-fired plants can be made to be extremely clean (low Sulfur, NOx, PM and heavy metals). While we have made great strides doing the same with internal combustion autos, it just doesn't make sense to invest in the type of equipment needed to remove these pollutants to the same degree.
Finally, there are viable sources of renewable energy on the market (MW scale wind) and on the horizon (MW scale solar thermal rankine and stirling cycle).
I hope this makes it clearer that electric IS superior to gasoline, even when coal is used as the plant fuel.
How can I buy stocks in this car? Warren Buffett has 10%,and I'd like to be in on this, first of all for it's 'green' profile, and also because I think that this will be the biggest thing in USA, EVENTUALLY! Bill Fords anesesters made this green house mess w/ gasoline hogs. Why is it that the US auto companies would rather close than make this vehicle??? And then it will take 5 yrs. and cost 5 times as much. Couldn't all car companies retool much faster? Couldn't costs be less? If priced decently, more would sell. Also, the lithium-ion battery's would need to be manufactored. I can see all sorts of jobs coming from this....why can't automakers?
I believe that John Yang ' nailed it' w/ his Jan.13th posting. This country runs on greed and oil. I digress here, but how do 21 polo horses die pre-game from' vitamin 'shots, as happened last month? The poor animals got tainted preformance enchancing drugs is what rumor says. These poor animals that worked their whole life to please man, lost their life because of greed(to win match by drugs). That greed is what makes companies close doors rather than try to develop sensable cars. Actually greed trumps many things for that matter. The US has been waiting for auto changes for 20 yrs,and been ignored while the major car companies produced behemoth vehicles that are environmentally, and actually people in other vehicles 'unfreindly'. Once again I digress, but there is a 'disposable' room deoderant available at stores right now that are motion activated--we can scent air,yet we can't make light plate fixtures that will turn off a room light if not activated(as the 'burglar' lights do now); and lights will only come on if dark.

A question I always have with electric cars is where are we going to get all the energy to power them? more coal fired stations or nuclear?
Where do I sign up for my own dealership???
This is really great news. Most important, if the price can get to about $18,000, this is a home run. Single day mileage at over 150 miles means that it fits 98% of typical driving behavior.
Now we just need 50 plus nuclear plants to provide the clean energy required, and 1/3 of co2 goes away.
Even better, monthly fuel costs are reduced about 2/3.
We're getting there. It is a shame that a battery manufacturer in China has to show us the way. But, the same thing happened with Prarie Schooners, some smart guy figured our how to put gas engine and wheel together. I'm just sad the Everready Bunny didn't get this done for the US.
Hey, wait am minute ! A while back I read about 2 percent availibility of lithium for the entire world fleet of vehicles on this planet. Where's the other 98 percent supposed to come from ?
I can't find the stock ticker anywhere online. Is it a public company?
Never heard of BYD before til today. The E6 looks like a usable every day electric car. We have been depending of fossil fuel for far too long. It is time for a change. No doubt there are a few drawbacks on pure electric car right now, but we shouldn't ignore it.
Can't wait to see all the electric cars on the road.
Thanks for the post.
