T. Boone Pickens Rides the Wind

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 04.14.08
Science & Technology (alternative energy)

boonepickens.jpg Katie Fehrenbacher at Earth2Tech calls T. Boone Pickens "our favorite oil- baron- turned- wind- power- wildcatter, as he makes his first down payment on 500 wind turbines to build the world's largest wind farm. The Guardian calls it "the biggest and most audacious project of his career."

It may be the biggest but it is not the most audacious. That might be his three million dollars to support the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth . Or perhaps it is his $75 million purchase of ground water rights for 200,000 acres of Texas, where he will take water from the Ogallala Aquifer and pump it to El Paso or Dallas. He has no qualms about charging people for water- "I know what people say - water's a lot like air. Do you charge for air? 'Course not; you shouldn't charge for water," says he. "Well, OK, watch what happens. You won't have any water." He says he might clear a billion on the deal.

T. Boone Pickens controls much of Texas's oil and water already; soon he might control the wind. ::Guardian

We agree with T Boone re wind power. We have 125 acres in a high wind zone that are screaming for turbines. We are serviced by Pacific Power. However we cannot afford to install a wind farm...incentives???

I think it is telling that the environmentalists true colors come out in a situation like this. Apparently it's not about what is right and wrong for the US and the environment if someone is making money from it or it is someone they don't like. You don't think he should make money from his investment in water rights and building the infrastructure to pump it in? Okay, then build it yourself or wait for the bloated, slow, incompetent government to do it for you. Wake up and start acting rationally. Support things based on the outcome you desire, not who will profit from it.

Numerous mountains in the Applachians that have been mined and reclaimed are solid and just perfect for wind and solar systems. Reclaimed moutaintops would solve much of our energy problems. Would like to converse withMr. Pickens.

I will wait to see where the other shoe drops before I form an opinion. I am afriad there may be a very profitable and catch with some very ungood results. Sorry T boone, your history of slime leaves me cynical.

At best Wind Power, Solar and other "alternative energy sources" are ruthlessly expensive money-pits, which require 24-hour backup by coal power (thereby eliminating any true benefit), cost the taxpayer millions and offer a meager, prolonged return on investment. Over the next 50 years or so, people will innovate and perhaps in a hundred years we will have a new fuel, but more than likely we will realize that nuclear is the only sensible alternative for domestic energy.

In the meantime, we have more coal than any country on earth and tons of oil resources. Let's drill and supply ourselves while legendary American innovation paves the way to the future.

T. Boone Pickens is also a legendary poker player. Boone plays any deal like a poker game, ready for chance and the opportunity to take advantage.

Pickens realizes that the last cards are being dealt in a penultimate game of hold-em. The last card face down is only known in the mind of this ancient, wise, ruthless man.

I genuinely believe that T. Boone Pickens is dissatisfied with how the oil game has been played, so Pickens is playing his own hand. T. Boone Pickens doesn't have many friends to lose, and his time on earth is coming to a ripe old end.

I don't like the guy, he's a ruthless business man and perhaps a robber barron. The river card is down and America has a weak hand, let Boone play this round unencumbered. Watch closely and all of U.S. will learn something about America.

I'd love to launch an IPO phone company from the tops of his wind turbines, WIFI, private and secure from FISA and HS goons. Endless possibilities here.

T Bone Pickens is an accident waiting to happen. He is going to broadside America. He has only told half the story .Wind and solar power can only be viable with the backup of conventional electric power plants. For every kilo watt of wind and solar power produce you need coal fired, hydro or nucular power plants to match output. No one using these systems, wind and solar would disconnect from the main power grid. Americans need power on demand not weather permitting. T Boone Pickens is a paper oil man selling America a plan that is a failure . He will make more billons and Americans will pay for two electric power systems. We have a oil supply problem, America runs on oil. When you have an vision problem you do not go and see a foot doctor.T Boone Pickens would have best served the American people if he said I am going to drill here drill now and do what it takes to deliver american oil to the american people. Texas and Oklahoma invented oil, get the refinery's up and running. In these days of doom and gloom the American people need to hear a can do attitude. The timming could not be better with 70% of Americans behind this effort. The oil traders and oil producing nations would go running for the hills. Oil prices would drop and supply would go up. America"s Most powerfull weapon and most feared is American know how and resolve. That is why our foes try to strike us from with in. We must do it all , drill, wind and solar but use them correctly. The last time I check America can still walk, talk and chew buble gum at the same time. PS We mite even be able to sell China oil to pay off our debt

Top Ten Ways T. Boone Pickens Could Better Spend His Ten Billion

10. Buy air time apologizing to the American public for funding Swift Boat...
9. Spend a lot of money convincing Texas to put bounties on politicians and underwrite them...
8. Pay off the bet he welshed on to the Vets' organization that documented the Swift Boat lies.
7. Take a university class from Al Gore.
6. Send me a modest one-tenth of one percent--a mere ten mill--to buy my silence; otherwise I'm e-mailing Letterman
5. Loan Rush Limbaugh some money for a shrink, group therapy and to finish his college education...
4. Hire Scott Mclellan as his press secretary...
3. Take a year-long ocean cruise and invite Rupert Murdoch to accompany him...
2. Two year's health care insurance for one mllion uninsured American workers...
1. A dinner date with Jane Fonda...

He's pushing wind,
solar is less than 2ndary.

I asked myself why is he picking wind over solar?

Well, wind is better suited to large open fields, or in other words, wind is not very well suited for suburbia. Solar on the other hand can bo placed on suburban homes as well as rural America.

So, why is he pushing wind over solar?
If all, most, some, of suburbia and rural throws solar panels on their homes, they'd be less reliant on the grid. And that IMO is what the Pickens plan is all about preventing the individual from generating their own power. The ability to generate onsite electricity can easily have a huge impact on what energy means to this country. The pickens plan's main goal is to avoid the following scenario(s):

Onsite power generation - a huge impact on the need for the grid.
The end of the combustion engine - As battery efficency continues to increase as does the efficiency of solar panels why not run our cars and trucks from electric motors?

Electric motors are a lot more efficient than internal combustion engines. Consider this, less energy is wasted in the form of sound from an electric motor. That's why a combustion engine is louder - that's all wasted energy. Consider this, an electric motor can be computer controlled to run at peak performance. An electric motor has a lot less parts. So why does the push continue to internal combustion engine? Because onsite generation of CNG is impossible.

Put simply, the Long Term goal of the pickens plan is to keep power out of the individual's hands.

So treehuggers, let me get this right. we should dismiss an idea - the only idea - anyone has to fix the fubar state we now find ourselves. so what do we do instead? wait for our bloated, incompetent government to fix it? maybe this IS the plan. it sounds reasonable so far and it seems to make sense. why not try it? this is exactly the audacity and roll up the sleeves and get shit done attitude that this country was once known for. and if mr. pickens makes a trillion dollars on this, so what? he's earned it. i hope my 401 is invested in it too. this type of investment trickles down in many ways. why shouldn't innovation be not just recognized but honored? don't you think this kind of business investment is GOOD for our country? the reality is investment in good companies who make great products is exactly why you are able to post something on the Internet. That's called progress. Tthat what made your computer, your ipod, your bicycle you ride to work to lessen your carbon footprint that you're schlepping around. I urge people to be truly liberal and be open and informed on all possibilities.

I have been involved in the engineering field for 40+ years and have preached that hydrogen can be extracted directly from air or water and used as we go. The results are clean, available and can be utilized on land, sea and in the air. All we need is forward thinking scientists and the money to pursue it.
