Poll: Americans Prefer Energy Fix to Cancer Cure

A nationwide survey of nearly 700 people suggests Americans would prefer that more money be invested in technology to solve our energy problems than to cure cancer or other diseases. In fact, roughly 37 percent of respondents said they would rank spending to raise energy efficiency and develop alternative fuel technology a top priority for future investment compared to just 30 percent who ranked more cash for breakthroughs on problems such as cancer as being most important.
According to Gerald Gordon, chief executive of the group that conducted the study, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority in Virginia, "I think it's a combination of things like high gas prices and the need for alternative fuels, but also things that are emotional like greenhouse effects, global warming and the need for reducing carbon emissions."
And while this survey comes just as gas prices continue to reach new highs in the U.S., I have to wonder how much more heavily the results would have favored investment in alternative energy if most Americans realized how many of their tax dollars go towards keeping the price at the gas pump so low?

Maybe people are just being realistic. Improving our energy situation helps us all. Spending big money to try to cure a disease. The pharmaceutical industry isn't trying to cure anything. They want to come just barely close enough so that you'll want to buy their maintenance drugs for the rest of your life. Greed is working here just fine, it isn't restricted to Big Oil.
I agree with Mark. They know very well that they could cure cancer but you wont see it happen anytime soon.
