Graphic Of The Day: Americans Driving Less
by John Laumer, Philadelphia

When I was shopping for my new-to-me car, I was amused by the lots full of SUVs and trucks and almost devoid of small, fuel-efficient cars. It took me almost two months to find the car I wanted (a Scion xA), and even then I had to put two offers on it because somebody else wanted it as well.

It's a source of joy for me to go into town and see so many people riding their bikes nowadays. Not even a week ago I saw people riding their bikes around in 35° weather in a northern Michigan town. It's nice.
Wow. Look at that. A tiny dip in consumption from its all-time high.
Why is it that Americans are now driving twice as much as in 1980?
