Al Gore has a brand-new slide show, "New Thinking on the Climate Crisis" premiering exclusively on TED.com. Here's a an excerpt wherein he ratchets up the viscosity level on America's addiction to oil, specifically with regard to investing in dead-end technologies such as tar sands and shale oil. Those who do have "a portfolio crammed with subprime carbon assets." Full 22 minute video below the fold or, in light of how pressed for time we all are in addressing the climate crisis, you can find the slideshow condensed to 2 minutes here.

Al Gore's New Slideshow: Uncle Sam is the Man With the Golden Arm (30 second video) from George Spyros on Vimeo.

From TED.com:

In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

UPDATE: Here's another 30-second video from Gore's slideshow to WATCH!

I don't believe in many politicians but I'm firm in the belief that if Al Gore had been in the White House rather than Bush Jr the US and the world would be in a much better state of affairs.

A new apex in understatement, weee...right in line with W calling the current economic crisis "a slowdown".
Al got shut down on the energy policy stuff by Bill C and then he bailed instead of fighting the good fight when the Florida vote got hijacked. He's a well intentioned man, no doubt, but he needs to follow through more when he's fighting for his ideas. I hope this is the issue that has finally galvanized his resolve; it certainly seems to be.

Keep it up, Al!

Now if we could only get some spine in the rest of the country...

I've seen the video. What struck me most is when he said it's fine for individuals to reduce their personal carbon footprint but "we need laws." Bush and Congress are fiddling while the Earth burns. We've wasted the first 8 years of the new millenium when we should have been doing much more at the federal level. Now time is running out and we have nearly another year of this administration. I've just posted on my blog an update of the Lieberman-Warner "Climate Security Act" coming up for a Senate vote in June. Even this "compromise" bill will have a hard time passing the Senate, much less getting the House and president to agree. Too much ignorance, influence and short-sightedness.

We are conducting a Fortune 500 Program on Future for Sustainable Packaging: 2008-2018. I also co-developed and teach Essentials for Sustainable Packaging and would be happy to figure out how we can help/synergize with Al Gore effort on Global Warming. I/we are believers and believe we can help tak e the message forward. If interested please contact me to discuss opportunities - our first meeting is 5/6/08 and would be happy to include some of the Gore info.

Hey,

I'm a multimedia student, 22 years old. I've been doing a lot of research on the tobacco industry for my project. The stuff I've learned is really, really horrible. I quit smoking right off after that, not cuz I know what cigarettes do to me, but cuz I now know what the planet has to go through to produce these cigarettes.

In short
1. Deforestation
2. Pesticides and Insecticides in the soil
3. Chemicals in the cigarettes
4. Fire injuries
5. Cigarette butts contain harmful chemicals that disolve into the sea and other water bodies when discarded.

The thing is, in some way or the other, everything on this planet needs raw resources. Like cotton, food, whatever... but we need those things. Surely more than we need death chemicals in our lungs right>??? If anyone out there wants to quit smoking, do it... better for you and the planet!!!
