Integrated Washing Machine-Toilet
by Mairi Beautyman, Berlin, Germany on 03.25.08
Take two essential household appliances and stick them together, and what do you get? This entry to the Greener Gadgets Design competition: the Washup washing machine-toilet by Sevin Coskun. With a space-saving design that includes graywater recycling, the wall-mounted Washup stores water used in the washer in the toilet, to be reused for flushing. As the washer is located above the toilet, loading can be completed without awkward back bending. Another plus? The Washup's positive message about graywater recycling, which is usually not so visible. via ::Core77 Also see ::the Greener Gadgets Wrap-up Video ::the Greener Gadgets Design Competition Winners ::Chris Jordan on Greener Gadgets

Just don't drop any of your clothes.
I was just thinking the same thing! I love the idea, but I think it would be cumbersome loading the washer while straddling the toilet. Still, it is certainly a step in the right direction!
A more practical approach would be for the washer, located on the floor as it usually would be, to pump the water into a separate tank above the toilet. it might need to be a very large tank given the amount of water that washers use. There would also need to be a mechanism to control the release of water, so that the entire contents of the holding tank wasn't released at once. In most households, the toilet would be used much more frequently than the washing machine.
under-counter washer and both the sink and washer water go into the toilet/sub-floor radiant heating....
at least, that's my ideal.
But add me to the column of people who's first thought was "just don't drop your clothes!" they couldn't have at least taken the picture with the lid down?
lol, Emily, that was exactly my thought! The toilet should be closed for the photo!
you could also put a stacked washer/dryer next to the toilet to allow for drainage from the washer to the toilet. (I assume that is why they they put the washer on top of the toilet in the first place.)
Dryers are so 60's man.......
What a super awesome idea!! Also because one of my projects is for rainwater collection, but I had no idea in my head to use washer water for the toilet. Just out of mind.
I have plenty of space under a porch for tanks (cut up and gang together old plastic barrells). I just need a decent system to get the water up 3 floors.
Yes, ... my first thought as well ... don't drop the clothes!! hahaha !
vsk
Okay, great idea, but someone has to say it--so what does it feel like if you are sitting down and the washer is running? :)
Cheers
I get some pretty dirty jeans form working outside. I also have some very very filthy ACUs from my job as a career soldier. So what do I do when I poop real hard and splash my bottom with that gross water? Take a shower? Then that defeats the purpose completely.
