The Vatican Declares Pollution One of the Most Deadly Modern Sins

Pollution and gene-manipulation are a few of the modern sins the Vatican suggests should be added to the traditional seven deadly sins, after last week’s training seminar for priests in Rome, held to encourage the practice of confession again. “Thou shall not pollute the Earth. Thou shall beware genetic manipulation. Thou shalt not carry out morally dubious scientific experiments" might soon be incorporated in the Ten Commandments.
The most dangerous areas for committing the new sins are bio-ethics and ecology, as Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti reveals in an interview with the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. He says: "Within bioethics there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control." Hence, those at risk to be eternally punished are scientists who manipulate genes, and those who pollute in one way or another the planet. Next to the new eco-sins, Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti also names capitalism, drugs, abortion and paedophilia as some of the greatest sins of our times.
The Vatican is definitely becoming greener under Pope Benedict who has been active in the Vatican's environmental campaign and made several cri de coeur to fight climate change and protect the environment. Last but not least, the Pope is making a big effort to green the buildings of the Vatican by installing solar panels and LED lighting.

This is outrageously silly.
All sex and viral infections are genetic manipulation, as is growing near any modern commercial food crop.
... this would make it a "sin" to have a cold, or to eat...
Meanwhile, throwing in a religious clunker to roadblock genetic engineering is counterproductive, because this is probably the only path to a sustainable future that there is, and is most assuredly the only path we know of where the results are demonstrated as being viable.
Sustaining todays world population is based on Genetically Modified foods.
It's nice to hear God wants to go green now, but sad to know God skipped Science class once again. (Puts me in mind of the time God thought the earth he'd made was flat).
