Stupid Bike Lanes

by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 03.29.08
Cars & Transportation (bikes)

Slate films what it calls the "stupidest bike lane" in Westwood, Los Angeles, that runs for less than a block and ends without markings. They invite suggestions for other stupid bike lanes. I can think of a few pretty idiotic ones in Toronto...via ::Planetizen

i like the random scene when he drinks bottled water....other then that you could deem most of the city of Ottawa bike lanes pretty stupid. The fact that they put them in in quiet residential streets but no on main streets where they are needed!

Well, you've got to start somewhere. Occasionally, I guess you have to stop right there too.

But, as we all know, it's the network, not the individual segments that comprise it. With luck, this will soon sprout many more miles of bike lane.

I recommend a look at Warrington Cycle Campaign's "Facility of the month" http://www.warringtoncyclecampaign.co.uk/

The best are now collected in a book: http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/crap-cycle-lanes-a-great-read-13492

Ha!

Yes, I was just going to suggest the Warrington Cycle campaign - someone has beaten me to it!

I think the UK has made the useless bike lane into an art form.

My fellow cartoonist friend, Fred has been crusading against crap cycle lanes for ages:

Mock-ye-not ... the UK anomalies arose out of a planning regulation many years ago stating that every time a road or junction was re-configured or re-paved, it had to have a cycle lane ... of course this meant that there were some peculiarly short bike lanes at the time, but now it means that the UK has one of the largest networks of cycle lanes in the world .. it just took some time.
