NYC Bicycle Shelter Parking iPhone Photos: How Street It Is

While making the weekly mecca to the famed Union Square Farmers Market, this TreeHugger stumbled upon a suhweet street oasis: some fresh, clean, modern and user-friendly bicycle parking. Cemusa, a company that has a contract to build bus shelters and newsstands on city sidewalks, has installed the first of 37 bike shelters, which provide covered racks and cycling maps of the city. Check out a bunch of iPhone snaps showing the maps and instructions provided for locking up your ride when you pop a wheelie over the jump.
According to a Department of Transportation spokesperson, last year about 800 new bike racks were added bringing the citywide total to more than 4,000 that can accommodate 20,000 bikes. We are psyched about these shelters and really looking forward to the next big bike thang coming through for NYC: its first-ever bike-only parking lot with attendant. Also take a gander at these other great bicycle storage options.

First I want to comment on how ridiculous it is that you mentioned your iPhone, not just once, but twice...in the tile of the post even! Can we say pretentious?
As much as I love the informative posters for those new to cycling in the city, anyone who parks their bike outside knows how completely useless that "shelter" is. The relation of the height and size of the roof compared to the way rain and sunlight fall to earth, make these no more than a quaint gesture.
It also won't shelter your bike from thieves, it will just give them a little shade while they cut your lock.
I've always been scared of driving in NYC. I just can't image bicycling there.
I was also totally confused by the mention of the iPhone! What does that have to do with the bike rack?? Poor journalism if you ask me.
Seems like the shelter is a waste of money. Wouldn't it be better to build more and more racks with that money instead? Although the signs show a lot of thought put into it by the city which is a great sign.
Does it matter the iPhone took it? Quality isn't even that good.
Maybe I should name my photos from my camera.
"NYC Bicycle Shelter Parking Sony PHotos : How Street it is"
Not to mention neither Apple or Sony have anything to do with the story.
lame that the iphone was mentioned twice BUT...
god knows what's in the laptop you're commenting from.
A computer is a big choice, lots of hazmats and the likes. the impact of which should be one that EVERYONE is looking towards more as e-waste piles up at horrific levels
I've got a clunky old desktop and an iPhone because i'm on a bicycle all the time.
this is a professionally put together blog, bite your thumbs and note that he is blogging on the go using a device that's smaller and has less of an impact than the battery in your macbook
Although I love the idea of covered bicycle parking - i think that nyc needs many many more bicycle parking racks - everywhere and on every street. Perhaps the money could be better spent on bicycle racks installed in quantity?
