Actor Jeremy Piven joins singer Nellie Furtado in endorsing the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour, the one-hour global event occurring on March 29, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., in cities such as Denver, Honolulu, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco, Toronto, Montreal, Copenhagen, Dublin, and Tel Aviv, as well as Sydney, the site of the first Earth Hour event in 2007, among others.

If the greenhouse reductions achieved in Sydney's Central Business District during Earth Hour were sustained for a year, organizers say, we would save emissions equivalent to taking 48,616 cars off the road for a year.

Visit Earth Hour's Web site to see if your city or town is participating in this international show of solidarity for the fight against global warming—if not, organize your own Earth Hour event by encouraging friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers to go dark in nine days. ::Earth Hour

They tried to do something similair in the UK recently, they called it Earth Day and it was actually for 24hours, It didn't get a lot of publicity and the National Grid here actually reported a very slight rise in energy usage. Maybe going for an hour would be a good start!
Though seriously to tackle the issue of energy wastage, offices and businesses need to do their bit. Far too many of these leave lights and computers, etc on overnight wasting lots of electric.

Interesting idea but it seems like we need to do more than just a feel-good hour. So I see this as just a start and hope people, groups and government will do more.
