Yet Another Of Ann Coulter's Dislikes: Electric Cars

Cars & Transportation

ann-coulter-image.jpgAnn Coulter isn't shy about expressing her hatred of liberals in general and the New York times in particular, nor does she hesitate to proclaim that both climate change and evolution are hoaxes. Her inflammatory comments should come as no surprise; after all, she has done very well for herself as an author, columnist and commentator, and the basis of her success has been her willingness to speak her mind. What does come as a surprise, however, is another dislike she inadvertently expressed in a recent article about John McCain, the all-but-confirmed Republican nominee for president and strong supporter of climate change legislation. Comparing Senator McCain with Bob Dole, she said

Bob Dole from Kansas had a pretty good voting record, too. But no one fully believed he believed it. Another feather in his cap was that he didn't burden voters with a "Straight Talk Express," a means of conveyance even more useless and idiotic than an electric car.

So Ann Coulter also hates electric cars. Never mind that Israel is hoping to sell them like cell phones, Google is actively testing plug-in hybrids, Tesla has just delivered their first production electric vehicle, and Miles Automotive Group, Aptera and others are looking to bring affordable electric cars to market. We've got some hypothesis as to what's behind her comments after the fold.

1) She believes the liberal fearmongers are promoting electric cars as a way of getting a liberal agenda in through the back door: first electric cars, then renewable energy mandates, and next thing you know we'll all be living in hippy communes!

2) She associates electric cars with effete, effeminate intellectuals, whereas gas-guzzlers are all-American, manly and--why not--Christian, too!

3) Due to the fact that electric cars are quiet, thousands of lives will be lost if we start driving them because no one will hear them coming and old ladies will die while crossing the street. (we've actually seen this claim before with respect to the new CAFE standards.

4) She agrees with the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and believes that carbon dioxide is essential to life--so the more we spew out, the better!

And our last hypothesis is:

5) She doesn't believe in evolution, so how could she believe in electric cars? If God wanted us to use electric cars, he would have given us better battery packs and thousands of recharging stations.

Lascelles Linton over at AutoBlogGreen points out that "She has insulted lots of things (lots and lots and lots things) in the past but I think this is a first for electric transportation. Should EVs feel honored?"

Well readers, what do you think: what could possibly be 'driving' Ann Coulter's dislike of electric cars? And should EVs feel honored?

I love her! She is so pure. Almost as pure as the "God Hates Fags" swine. That purity of spirit should be applauded and welcomed. Leaves no wiggle room when that day of reckoning comes. ;)

Now I'll sneak off and get me one o dem big ol pickups, seeing as how my manhoods been challenged. :D

jump to top Willy Bio says:

note - I haven't even read the aritcle, but the headline alone makes me angry. She just makes me angry. Beyond any rational thought.

With that as a pre-amble, I'm now going to read the article.

she's kind of like the female Bill O'reilly sadly she is young so there will be crap spewing out of her mouth for a while. She is all that is wrong with america.

She hates everything that doesn't push her personal agenda.

As for being honored...any press is good press!

jump to top Emily says:

Why bother even trying to parse her? Any attempt to even try and take her seriously is giving her inflammatory nonsense much more credibility than it deserves.

jump to top Jason! says:

What a total a%$%^%. Let me go trade in my crossover for an electric car right now!

jump to top jenn says:

Jesus didn't drive an electric car, so neither should we, right? She is a voice that just really doesn't matter.

When she is old and in the last days of her life and she falls, breaks her hip or something. She will need to be brought to the hospital. We will have the last laugh when an electric ambulance comes to pick her up that was charged completely with renewable energy.

I'm laughing already, ignorance is amusing.

“The basis of her success is her willingness to speak her mind”.

Imagine that.

Ann Coulter is the reality TV of politics. Practicing the shock and awe campaign where any attention is good attention. It's sad and short lived.

jump to top Kelly says:

I am sorry, but it seems this posting is equally judgmental and petty as the quotes.
In industry there are many new processes and tools developed. Usually there is a following that will tote these new processes as the only way to go. Will electric cars have a place in the marketplace? Most likely. Will they replace all the gas cars on the road? I hope not. If that were to happen in the next 5 years we would have a huge crisis of gas engine cars stacked up all over the countryside. One tool does not fit all applications.

Attacking someone’s belief in creation is like attacking any religion. It should be viewed the same. I honestly doubt you would make the same comments about other world wide religions as you do about Christianity/Creation. If you were to do so, you would not be living freely in the green, but hiding in a cave.

Just something to think about.

jump to top David says:

Stop for a moment and consider that perhaps the only thing that Ann Coulter REALLY believes in is Ann Coulter. She is a creature of the media and will likely say anything or criticize anything or anyone just to get people agitated. We give people like her way too much credit for speaking out about principles and standards, when in fact, she's only interested in selling books and drawing attention to herself. Christopher Hitchens is another classic example of someone who seems to have changed his bombastic views to ride a popular wave. STOP GIVING THESE PEOPLE MORE CREDIT THAN THEY DESERVE.

The only interesting thing about Ann Coulter is that she has the uncanny ability to bring people on the other side of the aisle to her level quite easily, as evident in these comments.

If you stop mentioning her, you take away her power.

jump to top Abe Lincoln says:

@Kelly

Thanks for noting that. Anne Coulter may be a nut, but she, like everyone else that we don't like, should be criticized in a fair, reasonable and equitable way. To do otherwise is to make ourselves exactly like Anne Coulter...is that what we want?

Furthermore, making fun of Christianity seems to be popular. And so easy too! But if we want the green movement to grow from a trend to a way of life for mainstream America than we'll have to stop making petty and belittling remarks to the hard working, largely Christian, everyday Americans.

@ David

As a christian, when I detected the first hint in this article of being critical of christian extremists, I was wondering if the author was going to cross the line... Having read the article, I don't think he did.

First, a lot of prominent "christians" in the media deserve to be criticized. They don't reflect their professed beliefs, they just say they do. They defend raping God's green Earth, invading the place where most of the Bible took place in order to pump out oil (which further rapes the planet), and attack anyone that doesn't think the way they do, just to name a few... (And I'm in pain holding back the list of things she, and people like her, have done wrong) I'm pretty sure God doesn't approve of them... And I'm sure every reasonable human being would come to the same conclusion.

And about the jab connecting her fundamentalist creationism and electric cars... I don't think that's an unfair statement... I think it very accurately reflects how "reasonable" that cow is. That guy that wrote "The Purpose Driven Life" (a famous piece of recent christian literature for anyone that doesn't know haha..) was on the Colbert Report and he criticized fundamentalists- he described fundamentalists as people that plug up their ears and don't listen to anything besides what they already know; christian fundamentalists, evolution fundamentalists, atheist fundamentalists, Islamic fundamentalists- they're all just unreasonable people that won't listen to anything that might contribute to the Truth besides their truth.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't take it personally when reasonable people criticize totally unreasonable, very stupid people, just because you associate yourself with something that said unreasonable person has unfortunately named themselves a champion of. It'd be like a normal American citizen feeling personally insulted when the entire world, including the US, says that bush is a retard. lol...

A lot of supposedly christian public figures plastered their sewage on the christian identity, so you shouldn't be surprised when critics have a bone to pick with something that they rightfully disagree with. If anything, I think it's important to help people realize the distinction between what a real christian is, and these right wing idiots with god complexes are...

On a side note... I would love to be there when that bitch meets her maker and has to explain herself... lol...

Too bad everyone doesn't team up and ignore her...I'm pretty sure she'd shrivel up and melt away.

jump to top Shard says:

Ann Coulter young?! She's in her mid-40s. Her mouthing off isn't youthful indiscretion. It's just plain stupidity.

jump to top David II says:

She attacks the electric car because, just like creation/evolution, it is a subject that people are passionate about. Her persona feeds off of attention, particularly negative attention, and everytime the media, blogs or commenters call for her head they become pawns in her scam.

I have to give her credit, she is very good at what she does. But, if you just ignore her she will go away like every other talking head .

jump to top A.J. says:

She's ridiculous. The only thing interesting about her words is that anyone listens to them. She likes attention, she likes being "controversial", and posting articles like this accomplishes that plus continues the wonderful "us versus them" mentality of recent history.

jump to top spumoni [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Just like Howard Stern - use shock to get attention. Is it bad? well I think not really. We need her to get us mad enough to say something - to stand up and be leaders and say no. Do I agree with her - categorically no - does she help our cause I think yes. When people question why I need to care I use her as an example of how some people don't get it. Wishy washy fence sitters do not get things done - and she pushes you off the fence. Do you for a second think that anyone who was leaning on our side of the fence believes in what she is saying? She preaches to her choir and we need to preach to ours!

As for bringing in the whole evolution debate into the mix – does it really matter at the end of the day that you disagree? Telling people that they are crazy rarely makes them think – ohh yeah – you are right. Live and let live and find those that believe in what you believe and take a positive collective step forward.

Cheers - Eric

I think electric cars/hybrids are a great idea, but how about they make one that is actually realistic for a family. A family that has kids in car seats. Not a Toyota Prius that can only fit 2 adults in the front and 2 middle-aged kids in the back.

Or what about the Toyota IQ? If that got into a wreck, I would hate to see the end result. The only way that car would come out ok in a wreck and the driver/passengers didn't die is if it crashed into a bike.

Japan has made a Toyota minivan that seats seven. That is the definition of a practical hybrid. Enough room for all the kids, and room for groceries, soccer gear, bookbags etc.
Like I have said in the past, people won't make the change to go green if it is such a hassle. A great example of this: I just spent 90 dollars on replacing all my bulbs with CFL's. No one ever mentioned that the only place I can dispose of them is over a 45 minute drive away! Being green is a grea idea, but organizations need to actually think things completely through. Otherwise peolpe will just throw CFL's in the trash instead of doing what's right.

As for Ann Coulter goes, what I find appealing from her is she actually takes a stand in what she believes in (conservative values). Unlike some people that will fall for anything or believe whatever the hype or media plays that week or year (global warming from Al Gore followers). Do I think she is brash and turn a lot of people off with her attitude? Sure I do, but at least she is committed to her cause which is more than what I can say about a lot of other band wagoneers.

jump to top it's not easy being greeny says:

She is selling a whole line of Ann Coulter products -- books, speaking engagements, TV appearances -- to reactionaries. What new thing has she ever proposed or advocated? Her schtick is to react, react, react. She's like Andy Rooney, only worse.

Some Christian.

And if you believe in creationism, you will always be made fun of. It's funny.

jump to top Eric says:

Stop paying attention to her. Stop giving her press, which encourages others to pay attention to her. I don't really care what she thinks of electric cars or anything else; her track record clearly shows that nobody else should care either.

jump to top Sheepguy42 [TypeKey Profile Page] says:

Why are you even mentioning this? The main reason people like her have the spotlight is because their enemies give it to them. Why the heck should treehuggers give a darn about what she has to say about the environment??? Give me a break!

jump to top john kelly says:

Quite a few of the comments here seem to say, "Be quiet and she'll go away."

No. It doesn't work that way. When some throws out a bunch of lies, you are obligated to speak up.

"As for Ann Coulter goes, what I find appealing from her is she actually takes a stand in what she believes in ..."

Because someone takes a stand on something, doesn't mean you should believe them. Lots of people have taken stands on the wrong sides of issues throughout history.

Use reasoning and facts to make your decisions about issues. Don't be swayed by empty rhetoric.

jump to top Rob R says:

"Some Christian.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying holding bad people accountable for their sins. Certainly nothing un-christian.

And if u make fun of people for their faith, whatever religion they're from, you will never be considered a good human being.

Didn't u read my comment? That whole thing was about being respectful of others and putting down blind fundamentalism.

Although I agree with the others when they say that we should stop paying attention to that cow... Too much of a buzz over an uneducated jezebel yapping her trap... We really should stop talking about her and leaving a record amount of emotionally-charged comments... lol...

Ann Coulter (Conservative) and Al Sharpton (Liberal) are 2 peas in a pod... both like to poke sticks in other people's cages to stir up a reaction. At least it gets people talking.

My issue with electric cars is how we produce electricity - usually with coal or other fossil fuels. Furthermore there is also no infrastructure in place to support them yet, especially for quick fueling on long trips. For now, give me a good hybrid with a great warranty on the batteries, or even an efficient multi-fuel (Petrol and Ethanol/BioDiesel) vehicle for now. I'm conservative, and I'm looking at either the Aptera or the VentureOne Hybrids as a daily driver if I buy at the end of the year, though I'm really interested in the Bricklin when/if it comes out in 2-3 years. I wish I could afford the Fisker Karma though... :-)

"As for the pretty girls, I can only guess that it's because liberal boys never try to make a move on you without the U.N. Security Council's approval. Plus, it's no fun riding around in those dinky little hybrid cars. My pretty-girl allies stick out like a sore thumb amongst the corn-fed, no make-up, natural fiber, no-bra needing, sandal-wearing, hirsute, somewhat fragrant hippie-chick pie wagons they call "women" at the Democratic National Convention."

jump to top Jim says:

This woman baffles me. Utterly. My family LOVES her (I am the lone liberal) and I have come to belive she is the anti-christ.
Oh, and an electric car that is child friendly is great, but that car shouldn't have to seat 7. Families don't NEED to be that big. Kids don't NEED to be carted to activites, there are activites that are close enough that don't require tons of equipment or transportation. Why does everyone think they need a car? Live in the city, take the bus. Yeah, a car is needed if you live in the country, sure, I get that. But you can get around just fine without one in cities. Not the suburbs, but why would you want to live in the 'burbs??

jump to top Jena says:

I think you are a little hard on Anne! She does have a right to her opinion, even though it is a little blunt and meant to be brash and obnoxious, but also meant to be funny!

We conservatives don't hate Liberals, we just think you are wrong in your beleifs! You have to admit that liberals such as yourselves seem to think evey one is stupid, the only ones who know what is going on.

Liberals beleive that people arn't intelligent enough to go through hardship and challenges(This is another argument which I will probably get to in the future). Big government should take care of everyone through healthcare, retirement, food subsidies, houseing susidies, etc. Also intelectuals such as yourselves know all about the environment and stupid boobs such as the general public should not have accesss to own property. We should give all the power to you to take care of the environment for us.

Your motives are pure as the white driven snow and all you care about is cute little bunny rabbits, butterflys, and soft cuddly polar bears.

In reality if you cannot prove that the warming of the earth is caused by humans you are out of a JOB! We have no need for you if this is all naturally occuring! Take for instance the UN report on global warming. It was INCONCLUSIVE! The summary on the report was written by a environmentalist that needs to KEEP THEIR JOB AND CONTINUE GOVERMENT SPENDING!

What if we all agreed that government must controll all the land and that private ownership would become illegal? That is a lot of power AND money! All this power and money could motivate people such as Al Gore to LIE and SCARE people into beleiving something is true when it isn't!]

Anne Coulter is right. As of right now electric cars ARE useless! They do not meet the needs of the public!

Hopefully one day, with the help of capitolism and the American freedom and enginuity we will come up with an electric car that will meet the demands of the market.

Be better than she is.

jump to top anonymous says:

Neil defends Ann about as well as Sylvester chases Tweety. So close, eh? This Tu Quoque and Ad Hominem crap wears thin, too. Like no conservatives care about our survival. People concerned have nowhere else to go but government when industry is neglegent. In a perfect world, the government would control about 10% of what it does now because the rest would be unneccesary due to people thinking in longer views of the future tense. To be or what's to be?
The cause of CO2 buildup is quickly becoming moot. It's on us to address carbon loading in the atmosphere. Unless I'm mistaken, we're the only species around that can.
I wouldn't call myself a liberal, but you would. I'm pissed at the governments AND the corporates, they can't seem to see past their respective terms or fiscal quarters and thus they can't find their butts with both hands in moving forward. Patchwork piecemeal bandaid bullshit from both is the result.
Sure, Coulter's got a right to her opinion. But if that's the best you've got, I'm all set. This is the lady who called 9/11 widows harpies who should stop whining and take the money and run because their husbands probably would have left them anyway. Her credibility is shot with most considerate people. Still, what's a shill to do? She'll carry on as long as someone will stick a mike in her face.

Having a voice is one thing, using it irresponsibly is reprehensible and can be criminal. That's why it's illegal to yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater when there isn't one.

jump to top John says:

I think it's great to use the evil one's comments and notoriety to publicize electric cars. Using her bile to educate and organize is the best revenge.

jump to top libhomo says:

Course we ARE talking about the same woman who marvelled at how much 9/11 widows were enjoying the deaths of their husbands. When I first read that my friends and I agreed that she's a sociopath. If everyone ignores her long enough, she'll grow bored and move on.

This is an intelligent website and forum, let's not fall for such lame bait as Coulter's spewings.
