Survey: How Are You Spending the Holiday?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 02.18.08
It is a holiday in much of North America today; in most of the States it is Presidents day, legislated in 1971's Uniform Monday Holiday Act, a forgotten statute that rules that everyone must wear uniforms today. Some states have different rituals; in Massachusetts they honor Calvin Coolidge. Ontario, Canada joins the party with its brand new Family Day. How are you celebrating the day?

working. not even the kids have today off school... oddly, they do have Feb 25th off - teacher work day...
No one I know has the day off today. I didn't even remember it was a holiday...
Presidents Day in the United States is mostly a holiday for government employees and banks. Just about everyone else has to work today. I for one, am included in the latter group unfortunately. I'd love to have another day off every year.
Where I work, we get 7 paid "holidays": New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Day After Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
Working here too --- I have a friend who is a state employee, and he has the day off. Other than that, the rest of us are shackled as usual.
I'm making some bread and then I'm gonna make some vegan corn muffins (w/ chopped sprouts) to send to Farm Sanctuary (a great animal rescue organization).
State EE, no day off. The kids to have off school, though.
