Survey: Did You Watch The Game?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 02. 4.08
It is supposed to be the biggest TV event of the year; some watch it for the game, others watch it for the commercials; some just use it as an excuse for a party.
Others with lots of money crank out the CO2 by flying across the country to see a uniquely American event that leaves the rest of the world shaking their heads in wonder at the scale and excess.

I spent the time making dinners for the next week. Mmmm.. chicken risotto and chili
How about "I'm not American, and your sports mean nothing to me."
(Ok, it was televised over here in the UK, but I don't know anybody who watched it!)
I watched six nations rugby.. much more fun... way less comercial (they dont stop every 5 minutes or so)... and much less protected (helmets? what's that all about? you wear helmets on a motorbike.. not in a ball game (unless the ball Is really hard like baseball)) so way more fun to watch, and with great (and strict) rules....
Just to put the record straight, we're not shaking our heads "in wonder at the scale and excess", but in despair at the complete lack of any sport for the majority of this supposed sporting event.
And that ghastly performance of a fine national anthem. And those hideous graphics. For a country devoid of any decent cheese to eat it's amazing how much gets crammed into our eyes and eardrums at the Superbowl.
I watched and was disappointed. I should have gone first the "big party" option.

American football is a great sport -- if you're a fan. If you're not, why comment? This is the same reality for all sports -- none have universal appeal.
As for the rugby-(US)football comparison -- I played both in college and rugby is nowhere near as violent to the body as football. Period.
Also, why wasn't there a poll option along the lines of "Watched responsibly while still consuming beer and chips." ?
i spent the day compiling the group project for my marketing class. i would have completely forgotten it was superbowl sunday if my husband wasn't such a sports nut - lucky for me, he was at a friend's house watching the game leaving me home to spend about 5 hours correcting the atrocity one of my group-mates called a college level paper! lol
For once, I was excited for the game — and for what I expected to be a raft of new ads for green/sustainable products. The former paid off, the latter did not.
The one ad that had anything remotely to do with sustainability was a stretch at the best: a spot for the GMC Yukon Hybrid. Did you see it? More thoughts on the subject here:

none of the answers really applied to what I thought. But i checked "I went outside and played" even though I didn't. I didn't watch it and made muffins and watched sound of music instead. I don't think it's a stupid dumb sport though, but I do think it's gotten to a point in our culture where it means more than it should.

The option for "drank some beer, threw some chips at the tv and yelled at the defense" really should have been up there. I dont watch the Superbowl for all the hype of new Ads and half time, I like football. I grew up watching football, going to football practice when my dad was coaching a high school team. And I like the teams that were playing in it.
