63.02° House by Schemata Architecture Office

We do love showing small modern houses and the Japanese excel at them; this one is interesting because the architects appear to have placed it on the lot so oddly and inefficiently, to site it exactly 63.02° from the road, apparently to open up the interior to more natural light.

The Schemata Architecture Office says:

63.02°is built on a built up area in Tokyo. This small building is used as SOHO and an apartment for rent.

"This building is cut on the axis line inclined to a front road by 63.02°. The window in this building concentrates there. You can see the intersection by seeing the outside through the windows."

The interior can be described as minimalist.

Sometimes, perhaps one can be too minimalist for comfort.

That place is so damn cool! They've made the inside like tofu, so it will take on the flavor you give it when you start putting floor coverings, furniture, paint and wall and window coverings down.

So why don't builders in the US do anything this interesting? I'm kinda tired of seeing most of the really interesting homes being built in Europe and Asia. The thing that US builders don't understand is you don't always have to build something that appeals to the masses, just build something that appeals to enough people that one will buy it.

Hey, This looks like a larger version of many apartments. It's missing the fake tatami mats in the cheap apartments but it's got it all, including an airconditioner!

They build like that because they have no space. Up north, in Hokkaido they still build tacky stuff because.. well they have the space to build it even bigger.

But then you can watch the concrete "rot" or "melt" from the sea salt for the buildings on the coast line up there.
