Quote of the Day: David Ogilvy on Billboards
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto
on 02.27.08
David Ogilvy, founder of Ogilvy and Mather, in his 1963 autobiography:
I have a passion for landscape, and I have never seen one improved by a billboard. Where every prospect pleases, man is at his vilest when he erects a billboard. When I retire from Madison Avenue, I am going to start a secret society of masked vigilantes who will travel around the world on silent motor bikes, chopping down posters at the dark of the moon. How many juries will convict us when we are caught in these acts of beneficent citizenship?::Design Observer

you want to (re)start the monkey wrench gang!!!
lexy
There was a book about a group of people traveling around cutting down billboards (among other schemes). It was called The Monkey Wrench Gang. It was a fun, easy read fictitious paperback. Probably vintage by now.
Right. So I'm supposed to believe that the man who founded one of, if not THE largest advertisment & promotion agency on the planet is a real world Tyler Durden?
Is it just me, or does this reek of hypocrisy?
Yes, the Monkey Wrench Gang. One of the first books on environmental activism. Ed Abbey.
Well said, outdoor_gear. Hooray for Ed Abbey, and let's not forget about George Hayduke.
