Best of NY Gift Fair: JoshJakus

Berkeley, Calif.-based designer Josh Jakus previewed a few of his upcoming designs at the New York International Gift Fair last week, two of which venture into the realm of recycled rubber.

Pictured above are his 6-pack Coasters, which were inspired by the plastic rings on a conventional six-pack. "Add a touch of class to your next football party," says Jakus. How they work: Simply pop out the individual coasters for use, and then press them back into the rings for storage. The coasters come in your choice of black (100 percent recycled tires) and a variety of colors (30 percent post-industrial waste). Expect these to run from $16 to $18.

Forget the napkin rings, these Grabber Placemats come with their own holder cut into the material. Push the attached ring out of the mat and wrap it around your napkin, and then tuck it back in when the dinner party's over. Like the coasters above, these mats come in black (100 percent recycled tires) and a variety of colors (30 percent post-industrial waste). Estimated pricing is $16 to $18 each.

Made of Jakus' signature post-industrial wool felt (from factory excess), the Mediapocket is a pouch that protects your media device from bumps and scratches. It's designed to fit the iPod, iPhone, and other similar-size PDAs, phones, and media players. You also get an accent tag that comes in blue, gray, green, orange, or pink. Suggested retail is $19.
