Cromley Lofts: A Closer Look At The First LEED-Certified Condos In Virginia
by Justin Thomas, Virginia on 02.14.08

Last month, I wrote about Cromley Lofts, the condos in Virginia that received a Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2007. Since then, I had to chance to visit the condos, and speak with William Cromley, the architect and developer of the lofts. William worked on the lofts from design to construction, so he was able to ensure that his green vision was completely realized in the finished homes, while still making the condos affordable.

Elements of original building (a warehouse for Alexandria’s railroad business) have been elegantly incorporated into the new green design. The pillars in the room above were part of the original warehouse.

The lofts also have an impressive green roof, which actually contains purple-hued plants tolerant of Virginia winters. The green roof aids in keeping interior temperatures constant, and helps retain stormwater runoff.

The pine floors were also repurposed -- they were salvaged from a Georgia textile mill.

The lofts have efficient fixtures and appliances throughout, reducing power consumption by 20% and water consumption by 30% (when compared to a conventional condo).

You can see a list of all the green features of the building here.

Those are so gorgeous I was immediately thinking "I'm moving to Virginia!", until I noticed the price tag. *sigh* Someday LEED condos will be accessible for all!
... Hopefully
These condos are literally 4 blocks from my apt. They look great, but just like everything else here in Alexandria, the price is mind blowing. If it was more affordable, I would be on it in a sec.
Paying $1900 now for a 2 bedroom, but at least it is only 2 blocks to the metro train.
Great looking condo - but had expected the energy savings to be higher? Great idea to re-use materials but isn't it possible to reduce power/consumption much more than those measly 20-30% mentioned?
