Clevr: Create More Counter Space in Your Kitchen with an Oval Cutting Board

Space Saving Oval Cutting Board

TreeHugger is always looking for ways to get the most from small spaces, which is why we like "less is more" and transformer furniture. While not as dramatic as Aaron Tang's wall stairs or an entire bedroom in a box, we like the Corner Cutting Board for the same reasons. In the kitchen, where space is always at a premium and there never seems to be enough space, anything that adds counter space without a remodel gets a thumbs up.

The clever, space-creating design is made of solid beech available from KitchenSource.com ($120) but we also found this one at eBay for about $50. What else do you do to create extra space in the kitchen? via ::The Kitchn

My first impression was this is a cool idea, but after thinking about it, I'm not sure this really deserves a thumbs up. It's really adding very little additional surface area to the existing counter, while using an awful lot of additional material - relative to how much extra surface it provides. My guess it's a ratio of 7/8 wasted material (simply covering the existing useable counter) so that only about 1/8 of the material actually adds new usable surface. It seems a traditional cutting board that slides out from under the counter still provides much more bang for the buck.

It could just be me, but I don't see how this gives you that much more counter space. It does fill in the corner where the counter meets, but thats not much. It also seems to block drawers.

We have a normal thick rectangular on counter cutting board at home in our small kitchen and it doesn't get in the way. When we need cutting surface we cut, when we need counter we put things on top of it.

I like it, but see one flaw.
Curious small hands could tip it over, and that is bad enough if it's heavy, but a knife left on top of it and then tipped over even worse.

Keep your pot handles turned to the side(inward) to prevent young ones from getting burned if they are curious.

And how is this meant to be environmentally friendly? Get a grip.

I like that idea. It would work in my kitchen. I will make one, though.

There's a typo in the title. It should be "Clever" and not "Clevr".
