Clevr: Marta Antoszkiewicz's Kitchenette, for Urban Living

Apartment dwellers (and all those who think smaller is better) know that one of the keys to comfortable life in a small space is making it feel as spacious as possible; a few strategies for accomplishing this include keeping the clutter down, using individual items that serve multiple purposes and finding things that serve big purposes but have small footprints. Designer Marta Antoszkiewicz's "Kitchenette" collection falls into that last category; it's a cozy kitchen table whose chairs neatly slide away under the table when not in use. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

Quite reminiscent of Hans Olsen's Compact dining set (IKEA makes one as well, we're told), "Kitchenette" is smaller and replaces the warmth of the wood in Olsen's mid-century style with spare, clean, modern lines and a pop of red color in the seats. Antoszkiewicz, a recent graduate of the Industrial Design program at Carleton University, is looking for a design position to put this and other cool ideas to work. These sets are a nice idea, but they work better in a round table version. I've tried a patio set that was really nice at Home Depot.

The square ones like this tend to seat people at the corners, as well as sitting in a chair with a corner for a back. I've tried one similar to this and it's not comfortable.

Why not place the table legs at the corners, and have the chairs situated at the sides with straight backs and 'pointed' seats so they can fit underneath?

IKEA has a similar set

I thought it was a great idea, too.

Neato I guess but doesn't look very comfortable and the idea is already out there. I think I would rather have more comfortable chairs that fit below the table top and I agree with randykato regarding comfort. Doesn't look very comfortable.

Can you say Ikea?

Don't most chairs slide under most tables? In fact, with a reclined back, the legs actually slip under the edge of the table, giving it a smaller footprint on the floor - so you can walk closer to it in a tiny place.

I guess we should read the full article. The IKEA was linked right in there all along...

It's a nice design, aesthetically, it's simple, it's just enough retro to have a sense of oldschool, but like everybody else said, I very much doubt that its comfortable, and if you live in a small apartment, the last thing you want is a piece of furniture that's not comfortable. Having a footprint like a pillar also doesn't help very much, unless for some reason you make it so there is a storage space for ..god knows what you would put under a chair you're sitting on, other than say the morning paper, and then later in the day tumble each chair over to see in which one did you leave it. =)
