Casulo: An Entire Apartment's Furniture in One Small Box
by Collin Dunn, Corvallis, OR, USA on 02.11.08

It might not look like it, but inside this box, there's an armoire, a desk, a height-adjustable stool, two more stools, a six-shelf bookcase, and a bed with a mattress. Casulo, the brilliant, modular setup designed by Marcel Krings & Sebastian Mühlhäuser, hides furnishings enough for an entire room -- or, heck, an entire apartment -- in a small 31"x47" (that's 80 cm x 120 cm) box. Two people can lift, carry, and assemble (and then disassemble, when it's time to move) each piece of furniture within the Casulo in about 10 minutes -- it requires no tools for assembly -- and every part of the boxy exterior is used, negating any need for extraneous, wasteful packaging. Smart.
Casulo won the "Abraham & David Roentgen Award" in November 2007 for its "cleverness, finesse and qualitative realisation of the idea" and we think it's quite well-deserved; what a perfect solution for frequent movers and small space dwellers alike. More pics, plus a video, of the unboxing process, after the jump. ::Casulo via ::DesignSpotter

If you like what you see here, check out Matroshka, a compact living system that contains an L-shaped sofa, double bed, dinner table, four stools, total seating for 12, home office workspace, wardrobe and a bunch of storage, all in about 43 square feet.
And, at the end of the day, relax with BEDUP, the amazing space-saving bed that floats down from the ceiling when you need it at night and stores out of the way in the ceiling during the day.

Wow, I want one!
how do you get one!
how do you get one!
It´s a mouse apartment?
this is so completely awesome! I can imagine so many great reasons to own this!
i grew up military - both parents were army. We moved frequently, not as often as some, but plenty. This would have made packing and unpacking so much easier - not to mention the amazing cool factor of meeting new kids in your new location and saying, 'wanna see my whole room come out of a box?' instant popularity! lol
I dunno about an entire apartment but it'd be great for a small bedroom
I'm fascinated by this, and keep watching the website 7 second version of assembly. It would make a wonderful basis for some sort of performance art piece. That I, a art moron, would think that...
Other thoughts that popped into my head at first, second, and thirtieth glance: Colleges should use this for dorms. That bed looks uncomfortable. I bed the shelves aren't that sturdy. If you spin too much you'll going flying off the stool. It doesn't look very sturdy in general, and how durable can it be? It would be great for hosting parties if you want more space - but then you have to take everything down from the shelves and pack all your clothes. and... I hate yellow.
It seems like a great design experiment. It may not be practical now but it can inspire more practical designs that could see production as a bedroom in a box.
I hope the materials and construction make this a worthwhile investment for the future - sure the novelty that it fits in a box is pretty neat... but realistically, should our societies encourage this type of "momentary-innovation" - where the utility of the product might be minute...?

i want it in lebanon how mush it will cost
The only thing I don´t like about this concept is the red strap around the clothes box.
All of the other pieces had a preordained position and were carefully stacked and connected in a specific manner; this slides into this, this stacks on that and was methodical. The red strap didn't fit because it was placed approximately around the closet; not within a groove or within a series of loops. Otherwise, an idea that would work best in a building with an elevator; not easy carrying a large crate up 5 flights of stairs.
Some of it looks a little flimsy... maybe it could be made from higher quality [recycled] materials?
What is the Bed in a box made out of????
Love the concept!!!

It doesn't say what it's made of? If it were made out of sustainable wood that would make it more durable, if substantially heavier [but that doesn't matter much since you'd have to carry it on a dolly or trailer of some sort anyway]. That being said, I think it could be a good idea to have it come in sizes, such as small or large, and possibly medium, so that people who have the ability to carry around a box larger and heavier than that size easily would be able to get larger items [especially the bed. that is one tiny bed!]. This reminds me of the teeny tiny apartments in Japan, it would be great for those! All in all, a fantastic example of engineering. I could never have figured out the design to get all that to fit in there! Brilliant!!!
This seems like it would be a great idea if paired with the Katrina Cottage, or something similar. Maybe use shipping containers as the shelter, and to ship the boxes as well.
It doesn't look all that comfortable, but any port in a storm.
hi! why are u not sellin this!?? .. id like to buy one ...if i can see the price! ..
Wow. Never mind environmentally friendly - people will buy this if/when it's made available because it's AMAZINGLY GOOD DESIGN. If it's sold at a price point that college students (or more likely, the Mummy-Daddy Scholarship Fund) can afford, it'll go like hot cakes.
I hope the designer can find a good manufacturer and distributor soon.
Please if anyone know the price for this casulo just tell me by the email. Thanks a lot.
Would be great for a corporate temporary apartment.
Thiis is fabulous! About time! I've been dreaming about something like this. I'm going to put it on my blog. My hat is off to the designers.

yeah, it looks well thought out, and i expect very soon this concept will be put in development for mass production. ikea would snap this up no doubt in a hot sec.
Great for students, studios or lofts....great idea!
Looks really expensive... How much would these cost each if they were mass produced?
I want this how and where I can buy this.
thanks
this thing is totally unreal, You just have to start selling it!!!! I would like to have this thing too.
where can i order that?

All I could find so far!
Despues de ver como han amueblado un estudio, estamos ya dispuestos al habitat en modulos lunares o de lunaticos
This box is about 170 kg , It's OK for a studio but it's too much for humanitary use... I'm looking for ideas to reduce the weight and adapt the furniture to global need , for the 90 % during a"future tsunami" for example...
This concept is OK for a studio not for humanitary use...
I'm looking for a new concept with less weight (this is 170kg) and with furniture for the 90%...
Hands down…. This daring duo deserves any prize or recognition befitting good design. They hit their brief and accomplished good furniture design such as folding recliner chair, folding cabinet etc., at the very least, clean, minimal economical, clever and very urban. The mosaic of solutions all coming together to build a picture is very well thought out. I hope they have not only the talent but also the resources to develop this concept further. Perhaps it’s already in the works while I speak. Good work guys.
There are some brilliant designers out there.
But why do they most always choose such horrible, horrible colors?
Your article is very informative and helpful for users in furniture, interior home designing. There are other relevant posts, and articles on Modern contemporary home products on http://blog.spacify.com/
I agree colors are crap. Otherwise looks like a very good and practical design.
Weight could probably be reduced by use of polymers/plastics. Of course that would probably up the price and reduce durability depending on plastics quality. For example you could probably make shelves paper thin leaving only support structure a heavy durable component.
As far as price goes I would think it can't be expensive. I mean if you go for minimalistic furniture you probably don't want to spend much.
There should be an option that allows a folding double bed for obvious reasons. Seams like it would be trivial to implement.
I wounder if you can pack a whole room in a plane bag using carbon nanotube based reinforced plastics and fibers. :)
whoa... i have to say these guys are super smart! i love the idea.

this is the perfect gift for a minimalist...like me!! I hope they sell these overseas.
that is just amazing!
Wow. It freaks me out. I love it. Really for minimalist person and travelers. I hope i can have one.
