It's a new year at TreeHugger Forums; so far, 2008 is filled with all the possibilities for a great green year. Here are some of the highlights...

1) Forums user MyGreenTalk has a fitting question as we consider what's on tap for 2008: "What do you think are the top 3 environmental issues that have not received the attention they deserve? 1. Trans fats/ fat hydrogenation 2. Mercury emissions 3. Everyday household use of chemicals (e.g. flame retardants in most bedding and furniture)." Further, "What do you think are the top 3 environmental issues that have received more attention they deserve: 1. Overpopulation 2. Climate change 3. Recycling" List-making always generates great discussion; what's on your top 3?

2) Employing the Forums' polling feature, user MissyWombat wants to know about the impact of having kids on being green. "While I totally recognise the impact of population on emissions etc there is an assumption that the increase is linear in relation to the number of children you have. But is that accurate? In my household I spend the same amount on my utilities and food as I did before I had children...Has anyone seen an analysis of the change in consumption patterns that having children causes?"

3) Lastly, Forums user lh newbie has a green home improvement issue: "We are now in the market for a new washer/dryer. We have both gas and electric hookups. The dryer decision is where I'm hung up. The question is: should I go with an electric dryer? Or go with natural gas? What are the pros/cons?" As it turns out, gas is much cheaper, but electricity can be produced with renewable sources, either from a local utility or with your own solar panels on the roof. So, it's a larger question of just cost or short-term efficiency; it's about renewable vs. non-renewable energy. Interesting debate.
