Survey: Are You Voting This Year?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 01. 4.08
The New York Times suggests that one reason for Barack Obama's victory in Iowa was "a massive increase in first-time caucusgoers, including many independent voters and younger voters." Yet young people are reputed to stay away in election time and to be under-represented. In 2004, under 60% of the eligible voters turned out and it was considered a good year. Is it going to be different this time? Are the issues important enough to get you out to vote?

I find it absolutely appalling and one of the most embarrassing thing about being a US citizen that so many people here don't vote!
Ok, this is how voting should be (in my opinion)
- Voting is not a right, it is a duty. Therefore voting should be mandatory.
- If you don't vote, you get a ticket (unless you are sick or away from your voting area).
- If you don't like any of the candidates, you vote blank. That vote goes to whoever wins the election (in order to increase the winning margin)
- Elections are held on Sunday, so everybody can go.
- Monday is a day off for schools and voting locations
- Elections have to be won by a margin of at least 15% (no 49%-51% bullshit, that is not representative of the majority's opinion)
- If the margin is not met a new election is done with only the 2 top candidates.
i was listening to the CBC (canadian broadcasting corperation) hey were on site in iowa asking locals about it. Every single person i heard said something to the effect of i will vote for this person for change though nothing is going to change. Everyone sounded so depressed and hopeless. Probably the biggest problem with lack of votes is the horrible voting system.
not saying canada's is any better but we have the possibility of a minority government and coalition governments (not that they would want to do that). This means you dont necessarily have all the power with 1 person which frankly is scary considering it takes huge opposition from the house and senate to overturn anything that the president does.
All of your suggestions are good except for the "blank" vote going to the "winner".
If it's a "none of the above" vote, it should go to "none of the above".
How about a column for "I plan on voting, but wish other people wouldn't."
Get ready! I love the guy, but remember:
A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for ethanol.
