Surprising Number of UK Teens Support Total Ban on Air/Car Leisure Travel to Stop Global Warming

by Kenny Luna, North Babylon, NY on 01.10.08
Business & Politics (news)

In a survey of 16 to 19 yr.-olds done recently by the Future Foundation in the UK, a surprising number of green teens declare they want support some really radical steps to protect the environment. With one in eight going so far as to declare that they support a total ban on traveling by air for leisure purposes and one in ten vowing to support a ban on car travel for leisure purposes as well if global warming continues to worsen. And all of that’s not even what’s most surprising…

Frighteningly, almost 10% say they would be prepared to take part in guerrilla activities carried out by environmental groups that subscribe to the mantra of using such activities to press for change.

If truth be told, those groups have a whole lot to learn about human nature if they think they’re going to change hearts and minds using militant tactics. And I wonder if these kids realize it. I mean really, name the last person you know who decided to become a Muslim extremist after watching the media coverage of a terrorist attack?

We need people who conscientiously move the process forward on a daily basis at all levels. Not a bunch of hotheads who can't keep it together.

Well, using guerrilla tactics doesn't sound very eco-friendly does it? Do they not realize how hypocritical that is? Any type of war fare is incredibly destructive and kills unknown numbers of plants, & animals. A rather ignorant method of fighting for the environment, or anything for that matter. Violence doesn't solve anything.

We have to remain civilized and let the maggots have their way. They control the money, they control everything. The people must peacefully accept their fate. I am not a violent person, but give me a fargin' break! So the U.S. Illuminati are the only ones with the moral high ground to use violence to get what they want? Was this article written by Bill O'Reilly? Rush Limbaugh? Dick Cheney? There are a bunch of people, who, if they dropped dead tomorrow it wouldn't slow me down to breakfast. Gag, wheeze, enviro terrorists, yeah, they're the worst. Cough! Cough!

jump to top edgar says:

um ... 1 to 19 year olds!? does anyone really think you can get accurate survey results by interviewing 2 and 3 year olds? I'm sorry but this sounds crazy. Does a 7 year old know a 'guerilla tactic' isn't a way to eat bananas? It would make way more sense to limit the survey to 13 to 19 year olds. Don't ya think?

jump to top Clay says:

I don't believe it. According to high school figures released today, 50% of kids in the UK don't even reach the minimum educational standard expected - 5 GSCEs A-C. I don't believe many are going to take voluntary lifestyle changes on the basis of a reasoned argument.

Teens can't select their own leisure travel anyway, so they give up nothing.... They're at the mercy of their parents for money and the ability to enter into contracts. At least that's probably how I would have felt about it under the surface when I was a teenager.

Now I'm pushing 30, and I can afford leisure travel (though I usually use time off from work to go and visit family members including those same parents)... The issue looks quite different from this side of the money-and-independence-curve...

Ahh yes.... when the writer leaves off a digit, that does make for some fun. I did enjoy the line about whether or not a seven year knows a guerrilla tactic isn't a way to eat bananas...

Now, that said... Eco-terrorism is no joke, and does nothing to advance the cause of environmentalism either. Rather, it encourages the general public to put their heads in the sand even further when they hear about it, and pretend that only wackos want to protect the earth.

I can't see the good in that at all...

a survey of romantics that don't understand the issues, just got published on treehugger.com. that's all I got out of this article.

Violence solve nothing ...

For those of us who've lived a free life here in N. America, remember it UNFORTUNATELY took violence ... winning a war that was very violent.

The sad reality is that violence is in human nature. We can't wish it away.

I'm certainly not advocating it ... and I don't agree with it's use as a guerrilla tactic (except for the banana part ... which, coincidently, gorillas can also be violent ... from which we've inherited the traits?).

My point is, it's hardly surprising if the young people of today/tomorrow feel violence is their only option when they've been left with so many serious problems that 'diplomacy'/etc. failed to deal with.

jump to top Anonymous says:

Don't jump to conclusions, none of the kids questioned would have experienced Vietnam.

Guerilla doesn't necessarily mean military.

If you mention the word Guerilla to a British 16 to 19 year old they are most likely to think of Banksy. There have been many posts on Treehugger about non violent guerilla actions.

Is there a link for the report? What was the exact question asked? Asking if someone supports guerilla action is considerably different from supporting violent action.

jump to top Jon says:

Ahh... my argument that all humans should be caged until age 25 is proven right once again! ;)

Since when do any of us care what 10-19 year olds think about anything? They are basically unable to survive without supervision, and prone to excessive violence when presented with opposing views or tough situations.

This study is BULLOX!

jump to top Willy Bio says:

...and practical, level-headed behaviour has got us where?

Look back at the great victories of disobedience and tell me how many would not have been dismissed as "romantic notions"

jump to top Ruben says:

I think that violence should always be a last option in all issues. Violence breeds violence and tends to cause more problems than it solves. But I am not a Quaker that believes in pacifism for religious reasons. There are limits to what people, communities, nations, countries will tolerate before they say enough is enough and take up violence. We ALL have limits. Even the writer of this article. I know this, if your wife or child or mother had a gun pointed to their head and you felt the only thing that you could do to save your loved one was to use violence, you will use violence - Quaker or not. All of us have limits, and all issues have limits at which point people start taking to violence. This has always been the case and will always be the case. I would rather see global warming solved through peaceful means. But no one should delude themselves into thinking that the devastating damage it will cause to many societies will not lead to violence. And no one should be surprised that some will target with violence those people or societies that they blame for their desperation. Desperate people do desperate things. Always.

jump to top houston says:

I agree that desperate people do desperate things. That's the whole reason why constant public pressure on elected officials coupled with consumers doing the right thing is a necessity. We certainly don't need any more desperate people in the world, and rather, we need less of them.

Do I agree that us not solving these issues now will unavoidably lead to violence? Absolutely. But it is my opinion that groups who engage in violence do nothing to solve our problems. Rather, they paint us all with a broad and loathesome brush instead.

What we need is reasonable people taking concrete steps in a positive direction, while encouraging their friends and neighbors to do the same.

Violence is certainly not a way to encourage the masses to jump on board the great green bandwagon.

The best way to help in protecting the environment is to utilize the vast amount

of energy radiated by the sun.

Harnessing the energy from the sun is the best alternative and renewable source of

energy. The sun is totally and 100% environmentally friendly.

The only drawback to solar power is the initial investment which is at present is

not practical econoomically to many consumers.

If advanced manufacturing techniques are developed to produce cheaper and more

effecient solar panels, time will come most houses will be having roofs made of

solar panels and that would help a lot in making a better and pollution free

world.

Many Americans believe that travel is some unalienable right. Or that you "have" to travel to be a complete person, and those that can't or don't travel are defective (at least, that's the attitude I've been given). With all of the hidden costs, hassles, and anxieties with leisure travel, I wholeheartedly recommend people avoid travel as much as possible.
