Plant that Pistol

What a brilliant concept: Make a garden not war. Artist-activists Christopher Humes and Noah Scalin developed the Seed Gun, a 9mm 910 pistol that can be planted. The pistol, part of the Plant the Piece series, is actually a mixture of red clay powder, dry organic humus compost, and annual and perennial seeds--based on the city and state of the shipping address.

Plant_guns_2.jpgSeeds include Annual Baby's Breath, Dwarf Cornflower, Shasta Daisy, and Foxglove. The duo credits a quote from Isaiah as part of the inspiration for the project:

"And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, and never again will they learn war." -Isaiah 2:4

The company also produces Seed Bombs. Priced at $75, the Seed Gun can be purchased online. Great, so there will be a bunch of packages containing realistic (to a scanner) gun replicas going through our postal system. Either that, or terrorists will ship real guns with a seed-gun label on the package.

Either way, who will think of the children?

Perhaps this will encourage gardening in prisons.

Personally, I think I'll wait for the land-mine tulip bulbs.

Congratulations to Noah and Chris, who also helped found SPROUT, a local CSA.
