Gisele Bundchen Launches Flip Flop Line Drawing Attention to Conscious Use of Water

by Paula Alvarado, Buenos Aires on 01.22.08
Culture & Celebrity

Gisele Bundchen's Ipanema Sandals Ad Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen has designed a new line of rubber sandals for Ipanema brand, and for its presentation and advertising campaign, they have chosen to raise awareness about conscious use of water.

The model and brand are supporting a campaign by various organizations to protect the water of the Xingu river, which flows into the Amazon and is suffering from the deforestation in the region. They are also driving attention and supporting campaigns such as WWF's Springs from Brazil and Social-Environmental Institute's De Olho nos Mananciais, which are protecting several water resources near Sao Paulo.

On top of this, they have put up a website with domestic tips for people to save water at home and they have followed their premises in the spot that presents the sandals: all water used in it was re-used to clean the studio and irrigate gardens.

"Water is a very important part of our lives. People in general are too busy and sometimes forgets about the value of simple things: you know that you open the tap and it will run, but, What if you turned the tap one day and you got nothing?," she says in the presentation of the project at their website.

The sandals per se are not very green, but being from rubber makes them pretty durable and multi-use. The company, on the other hand, claims to have the following green policies:

-Recycling of 99% industrial waste;
-Water re-use in the productive system;
-PVC re-use;
-Paint waste re-use;
-And social initiatives like encouraging healthy habits in its employees.

I agree with the fact that this is not the greatest green story (probably should have categorized it as "almost green"), but I also think that a celebrity as big as Gisele driving attention to the use of water and donating earnings to programs for water basins protection is good.

I also gave attention to this only after checking if the company had a sustainability program, which they do. Of course I cannot say how big the program is, but I can say having just *some* policies is a lot in Latin America.

If Leo had let Gisele narrate the 11th Hour, he'd had a hit on his hands... shame they broke up before he wrapped up production... It's good to see Gisele go green! It's about time, considering who she'd been dating all this time... Leo should extend his green convictions to the women he loves... kick off a green modeling agency... but hey, that's just me.
