Designboom competitions are so much fun. The theme of the latest was Dining in 2015 and it got 4843 entries from 98 countries. Din-ink, designed by andrea cingoli + paolo emilio bellisario + cristian cellini + francesca fontana from italy, was one of the three winners:
Turn your favourite office tool from your desk in a common cutlery...this is din-ink. A set of pen caps, including a fork-cap, a knife-cap and a spoon-cap, that replaces the normal pen cap during lunch time! All caps are made by annually renewable resources, like natural starch and fibres, to be 100% biodegradable and atoxic, warranting the best alimentary use. Dispensing each set in a compostable packaging the whole set is designed to respect the environment. Now give your office ballpoint pen a good excuse to be gnawed by your teeth: use them for din-ink." ::Din-ink

These will be great....provided they don't suffer the biggest usability flaw I have with plastic ware. The knifes are almost always incapable of cutting anything harder than mushy pasta.
I would also hope that if we get vegetable based inks, we can get flavored inks. I am quite certain that I would end up with my pen in my soup more often than not. Just think, bland food, soak your Tabasco red pen in it for 30 seconds (red ink for those teachers), a pen with extra salt, a pen that adds pepper. Now being a foodie will look the same as being a geek! (at least in terms of pens carried)
Nice re use idea - you can keep your bics out the landfill for a little bit longer
This seems to be a novel solution to some as-yet unknown problem. What the heck, people love novelty!
What's wrong with metal utensils? Why create yet another product when we already have one that works just fine. Come on people...we don't need to consume more junk regardless if it's bio-degradable.
amazing! where can i buy them?!? did you know if i can find them on the net?
Looks a little too familiar to a project a friend and I worked on nearly 2 years ago if ya ask me...see for yourselves:

Coincidence?? I can't help but be a little suspicious...
Hey guys,
Looks like the winner of this competition was really "inspired" by James Rennick“s BIC Biro cutlery.
Here is the link:

See for yourselves.
Cheers.
