by Collin Dunn, Corvallis, OR, USA on 12. 5.07
Culture & Celebrity (audio video)

TreeHugger goes on and on (and on) about why design matters; here, legendary designer Philippe Stark gives us his own captivating take on the topic at TED in March 2007.

It's not the first excellent presentation we've seen from TED (nor the second) and certainly won't be the last. Read up on this year's TED winners, and watch ::Philippe Starck at TED via ::Core77

Thank you legendary designer, for contribuiting to the walling off and overuse of Panama's bayfront!
May yoour "accomplishment" not be overshadowed by the multitude of equally presumptuous proyects overcrowding the area.

Legendary? Charles and Ray Eames were legendary. Starck approaches design too much as an artist.

The difference between design and art for art's sake is that design intrinsically implies an objective of meeting a need, whereas art and self expression do not. I studied industrial design, and honestly, there are better designers out there who deserve more attention.

Genius is often misunderstood - and I have to confess that I didn't understand very much but he's more entertaining than Alessi!

Aleissi? Starck? These are high-brow designers for people with money who value aesthetics over function. Neither are particularly 'green,' except for the green of money. This, in my humble opinion, is the epitome of what design should *not* be, what keeps design as a whole out of reach from the masses. God forbid Starck and Aleissi be the ones we follow after!
