Three Years Ago in TreeHugger: Prefab and More Prefab
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 12.30.07

We looked at the NowHouse from Clever Homes (mixed reviews on their first model, they have done more since), The Wee House (Geoff Warner has gone on from success to success ever since) The Dwell House II (In January 2007 they wrote "As with all architectural undertakings, there have been many hurdles to clear, and a project we looked forward to celebrating in its completed form within two years has stretched longer than anticipated" and it has not been heard from since) and one project that got built on time and on budget, the Bird House. as critical as I am about many green "solutions", I must say I really like prefab housing such as the ones shown in this article. Construction is usually better, more predictable, and cheaper. And the real plus is that greenness comes as a side effect that can be enhanced for little or no extra money rather than something that is forced on to the existing process with its usual increase in costs.
I had hoped you would list some of the prefab housing built around steel cargo containers. Such as those found at http://www.fabprefab.com/fabfiles/containerbayhome.htm
I'm not sure exactly how thrilled I would be to live in a steel box but some of the designs look good and have appropriate soundproofing isolating you from the outside noises.
LA: these posts just cover what happened in the week three years ago; we have lots of posts on container housing on TH, just use the search box.
As a builder of many different types of buildings, I hated the feel of modulars that I researched in the 80's, but in the last few years I've built and remodeled about 20 different styles of homes that have the feel of every other house once the drywall goes up and the finishes are in place.
I'm currently working with two different manufacturers of modular homes that will offer customers the option of building these homes with FSC certified wood products, and I'm always looking at ways of reducing toxic adhesives wherever we can.
You know, mobile homes are prefabs too. why doesn't tree hugger ever talk about those.
LA: We do all the time, look up jennifer siegel and the minihome.
