Andrew Sullivan shows map where oil wealth is substituted for land area. He titles it "One Reason We're Not Leaving Iraq." Link to a larger version here

hmm, they have Iraq under wraps, already have thier hands all over kuwait and saudi arabia. Already talking about attacking Iran... (which i dont know how they can even get away with talking about it)

I can see venezuela being talked about shortly. "they.. they are going to switch to socialism!, thats basically communism and we hates communism! Lets get those damn commies!"

I bet you that the US oil companies have the very same map as above and are telling the US army which country gets it next.. i bet you...

fighting terrorism? more like creating it by doing it.

They forgot about the trillion barrels sitting in northern Alberta... That would make Canada 3 times the size of Saudi Arabia in this map. Easier to send troops north to get oil, than across the globe.

I assume that your map includes 'conventional' reserves of oil only. Had you included the 'heavy oil' reserves of the Alberta tar sands, Canada would be about the same size as Saudi Arabia!

Excellent Visual. Thanks for sharing.

If you look closer at the full page view, you will see the color is for consumption amounts.

So if we're in Iraq for the oil, where is it?

How come it's not $40 a barrel and gas isn't $1.82 ?

Yeah Yeah, the evil empires etc.

How's Tesla doing? How's the Cape Cod Wind Farm coming along?

It will be great when fgn sources of oil become irrelevant although we will all have to be scratching around in the dirt in some sort of Sally Struthersville to make a dent in our energy consumption.

There are interesting posts in the links to the other articles as well.

Oh and consider another alternative... let's just not care about our fgn oil supplies/suppliers. Let's just let the world slip into the barbaric anarchy it's leaning towards. Then what... How will the country power itself?

I would love to be uber protectionist/isolationist but the world's interdependencies are too intense. I think. What would really happen if we went laissez fair and tried to do whatever the rest of the world prescribed for us?

We aren't developed enough in alternative energy to thumb our noses at the rest of the world yet.

I hope the day comes.

Happy Friday!!

"I think."

Try not to . . . you'll feel better for a few seconds. Don't worry, the world will still be plenty screwed up when the alpha waves kick back in.

This could also be called "Why Saudi Arabia took no blame for 9/11"

I'd like to see the map based on what countries are developing the technologies which will, in all likelihood, make oil non-important. I expect that there will be technologies coming online soon (decade) and mainstream which will permanently scare the living doodoo out of the big oil producing countries.

This is certainly one reason why Dubai has converted to capitalism and a modified democracy building the global resort destination that will surpass Las Vegas and Disney World combined.

The world will need oil and likely use it up at some point (especially China and India), but these big oil countries need to be looking at where they will be in a few years. The United States for sure is moving down a very serious technology path that will solve our big oil dependency. That will be a good day for sure.

I would like to see a projection based on wealth and or nation ownership of fresh water. Can anyone recommend any?
