A Picture is Worth... Map of Urban Rail Transit Around the World
by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 12. 4.07

You can see the full-size version of the map here. See the post about it here.
The caption reads: “This playful diagram shows all the cities which have, are building or are planning to construct an urban rail system. It is the opening page of a new book about the graphic design of subway, metro, underground and U-Bahn system maps and diagrams.”

I think that's on purpose. Same deal with Canada.
they tried to do it on big straight lines, kind of like subway maps.
same thing with Minneapolis, which is NOT southeast of Chicago, nor is denver south of san deigo.
Oh, and this map is very euro-centric. The way a metro map works (at least in this case) the most lines HAVE to be in the center. This makes France/Germany/Russia WAY too important. South America and Asia, with those pesky beaners yellow people, are shunned. Obviously, the premise forces lines to be where they are, but in terms of land mass...
The authors seem to be eager to build new lines in Europe (Brown/Pink/Yellow has almost NO stations), where as in the Americas or Asia, they seem to try as hard as possable NOT to build new lines, even if it means fucking up the geography...
The definition of urban rail system seems rather tightly defined. I took the train around the city in Cape Town, South Africa. The trolley lines in New Orleans are more urban-focused than the proposed light rail in Seattle.

The book sounds interesting though. I love public transit, and it would be fun to study its architecture and aesthetics.
Same thing with Minneapolis south of Chicago
In case anyone doesn't immediately recognise it, this is a good parody of the London Underground Map. My station has been renamed Cairo...
They may need to add Charlotte, too. The light rail transit opened in Charlotte last week. :) The tree hugger urbanists here are pretty darned proud.
I agree that they should have included New Orleans and a few others with streetcars.
