A Picture is Worth...The Sum of the (Car) Parts...

We like Core77's little quiz on what this is a picture of:

a) what mechanics have nightmares about
b) a college prank perpetrated by extremely determined students at the local Polytech
c) a commercial for VW circa 1980-something
d) the only way to really find those sunglasses you lost
e) what engineers see in their heads every time we designers show them a simple concept sketch

We could add one to the mix:
f) at least 562 reasons why we prefer to bicycle, or, why we'd rather say "Solvitur Ambulando" than "Vroom vroom."

It looks like the status quo to me.

As a designer and engineer (and web designer) I must admit, option e is totally true. Whether it is a concept sketch or a web page mock-up, the implementation part is often under-appreciated by those who oogle the pretty outsides of a product.

I can just imagine what the engineers at Apple went through when presented with the task of having to implement the original iPod nano design: the concept sketch wouldn't have been much more than a box with a screen and a scroll wheel, perhaps with dimensional constraints. Those who design have it so much easier than those who engineer. But as usual, beauty gets more attention than brains, so a disproportionate amount of attention and appreciation goes to the designers.

Berkana - as a designer, I wholly give credit to the people who can make it like I draw it -- and make it stable and functioning to boot.

This picture will surely give me nightmares... ;-)

Well I'm a design engineer so I can see it from both sides :)
But it's still (f)......just look at all the crap you have to carry with you when you travel by car.
All those bits will weigh 100 times more than the components of my bike!

Cool pic. The thing I noticed was even this isn't taken down all the way - the tires are still on the wheels, for ex. And for the engineers whose job it is to build comfortable and safe auto seats, I am sure they're exclaiming "The seats aren't a single unit - there's lots of complexity and parts in those!" I can't tell from this resolution, but I bet the stereo, speakers, etc., are all shown as assembled units as well. It would be really interesting to take each and every assembly apart all the way back to all the piece parts and see THAT picture.

Makes my 83 Honda Rebel motorbike that gets 60mpg and has everything right there easy to get to and work on, and is reliable as all get out, look so much more elegant and beautiful.... even if it is a primitive old bike. Working on cars is a nightmare, the more modern they are, the worse they get.

I'd like to see what an electric car like the Tesla Roadster looks like in comparison... the engine would be what? 3 parts? but I suppose all the batteries would be broken down and lined up individually rather than staying in their ESS :P and all the wiring...

Oh this is too fun! I'd say it's a VW tune-up kit!
