This Holiday Season, 'Tis Better to Freecycle Than to Buy

Though TreeHugger prefers Buy Nothing Day to the sheer madness of Black Friday, that doesn't mean you have to live with less or even that you can't acquire stuff; a great way to do this is with something like The Freecycle Network (it really works!). The big day has passed, but the Network rolls on, and remains a good way to both find and get rid of stuff without having to involve any money.
The guy behind the Network is Deron Beal; he recently conducted an interview with the site Vickyandjen.com -- they specialize in "making life simple" -- all about using Freecycle to help keep more than 300 tons of trash out of landfills each day. That's over 1000 tons this long weekend, including Buy Nothing Day. Check out more of what the Founder and Executive Director of The Freecycle Network™ has to say in the interview, including tips on how to make the most of giving and getting free, recycled stuff; it's a lesson we all could probably stand to revisit this holiday season. ::The Freecycle Network via ::Vickyandjen.com

I Want That Bike!! there is nothing more treehugger then bringing an old bike back to life. Good thing there is a constant stream of them in my town too.
I absolutely love Freecycle! Last week I got a box full of complete sheet sets that looked brand new. Someone was getting rid of it because they were moving. This week I got rid of a 35mm camera I no longer use and a couple of Morsbags that I've been making to help cut down on plastic bag usage. Freecycle's totally great!
Wow, Jim, you really sound like someone who should never be allowed to have any pets. Or Freecycle, for that matter. Clearly, one bad experience from one bad pet owner means Freecycle is bad. Odd logic.
I am an absolute fan of freecycle. In my first week in the network, I got rid of some old books, plaster mix and an old stereo and got a new Earth Machine compost rig! So far I have saved over $100 and found good homes for stuff I would have otherwise thrown away.
I have had good luck with Freecycle in my town. I have gotten, and gotten rid of, piles of stuff.
I can't wait to move to my new home, in a bigger city. I figure there will be even more freecycle opportunities there, than in my small town.
Freecycle is great. Here in Brooklyn, we have several variations on this concept.
First, if you put something out on your sidewalk, it will invariably be gone in 20 minutes. Clothes, computers, furniture, bikes.
Second, on Craigslist, in the free section, people will post what they are putting out on the curb. It goes fast.
And, at the Park Slope Food Coop, they have several exchange events for clothes and other items.
Freecycle will be the subject of an upcoming episode of Real World Green
Yeah, Freecycle rocks! I got my first couch for my apartment from them back in 2004. It is a cool resource! Kept it out of the dump and kept it in use.
oh i just love freecycle...i like how much this feels like a real community...people taking care of each other...people caring about each other...remembering our roots...and taking care of our planet
This has been a great addition to resources. It seems to have raced across the globe too. I like the fact that it appeals to people in so many different walks of life.
Freecycle has been great! My partner is due to have a baby anytime, and we have gotten almost everything we needed from our local Freecycle list. It is truely amazing what gets passed on.
I LOVE my local Freecycle group! We moved last year into a smaller house and I was able to give away many items we were not going to have room for. Plus I have received some neat items....like the bed we are now sleeping on :)
I LOVE my freecycle group!
I've gotten one of my 2 guinea pigs thru it, also my couch, my bike, piles of record albums and a tv (for an art project). Plus it's a fantastic way to get rid of things you have no use for
Wow, Jim. Please to the ENTIRE animal kingdom a favor and never, ever get another pet again!
Our Freecycle community is great! We even have a couple of local spin-off groups that have formed, where we share information, too. It's all free, and we are getting to know our neighbors.

Hey Treehugger! Thanks for using and crediting my photo. I too am a big Freecycle fan here in Calgary - as well as Treehugger, Adbusters and BND fan. Very cool - cheers!

Does anyone know where I can get treehugger box for recycling paper from please? Our office has tried cutting down paper use but still use lots and so would be great to get the boxes and put them around office. Thanks
