Earlier this month, The New Yorker published an article about the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and its founder, Paul Watson. The article, Neptune’s Navy, describes the origins of Sea Shepherd, its mission, and its controversial tactics. Furthermore, it profiles Watson who is regarded as hero by some, and dismissed as a radical vigilante by others. Regardless of whether you agree with Watson’s tactics which often ramming his vessels into whaling ships, the article provides an interesting and sobering look into the threats that face some of the earth’s most precious marine environments and species.

Good for him...reason and diplomacy seem to have been ignored by countries like Japan who continue to whale so to hell with them. If it takes someone ramming them to get both of their feet into the civilized world then so be it. Whaling is absolutely absurd, unnecessary, and cruel in this day and age.
you are para-phrasing wrong Treehugger, Sea Shepherd did not ram the Japanese ship last year, the Nissan Maru rammed the Sea Shepherd ship, as was later proved correct by photographs that Australian authorities looked at. go to the Sea Shepherd website to read what REALLY happened, and what they do in general.
great eco-group!
the Japanese whalers are bloodthirsty criminals. hopefully, Australia will do something to help stop them this year, aside from moaning and wringing their hands.....
Paul Watson is featured in the movie Sharkwater. A must see!
Thanks for this. Treehugger wrote about the Nisshin Maru incident here:

I used to be a avid Greenpeace supporter, until recent months. Seems thay always want more donations, and yet they left the waters because of fuel issues, or they ran out of film and did not return, unlike Sea Shepard who has returned to continue the fight against Japanese whalers. So I have stopped giving my donation to Greenpeace. Shame on you Greenpeace for not giving the SSCS the coordinates to the whaling fleet. maybe with both of you working together not one whale would have been slaugthered
I also read on GP website how they stopped the whalers from slaughtering anymore whales when they were out there, hmm I believe the Steve Irwin had something to do with that, since they were out there at the same time.
Commercial Whaling, Taiji Dolphin Slaugher, Canadian Seal Hunt needs to be halted, and that is why I support Capt Watson and his society, because they do something about it, not just take pictures.

Finally someone is catching on to thier tactics. Hands out all the time for money and the poor unexpecting soul listening to Paul Watson and his dangerous mouth. He's only in it for the money. Look at his picture, it gives me the creeps Has he told you that the sealers take a course on killing seal. They are more humane than he is. Animals over human beings, not a nice man
