"Invention Nation" Premieres Tonight, The Science Channel

by Jasmin Malik Chua, Jersey City, USA on 11.19.07
Science & Technology

inventionnation.jpg
Invention Nation hosts Chris Martin (left), Micah Donovan, and Nobu Adilman work on constructing a wind turbine during a visit to Woodhenge in Adams Center, N.Y. Jim Juczak, of Woodhenge and Steve Spence, of Green-Trust developed a prototype of a do-it-yourself wind turbine. Woodhenge is an off-grid, renewable energy, alternative building and sustainable agriculture learning center in Northern NY.

Hop aboard their veggie-fueled bus and follow Micah, Chris, and Nobu across America as they hunt for the nation's most amazing grassroots eco-inventions, whether it's a human-powered car or a solar panel made from used CDs.

The guys will be giving us an inside look into the lives of these MacGyvers—regular folks who decided to solve day-to-day problems using only their noggin and the desire to tread lightly on the environment. The show premieres tonight at 10pm (ET/PT) on The Science Channel.::Invention Nation

Full disclosure: TreeHugger and The Science Channel are both properties of Discovery Communications.

I watched a couple of episodes of this show (Deep Frying Diesel and Human Powered) and I'm sorry to say, but I was not impressed with the program. I must not be the target audience as they covered ground that has been covered before, in a much more eloquent fashion on other programs. See: Modern Marvels 'Evironmental Tech' and 'Big Ideas for a Small Planet'. These guys drove from LA to OJAI, Calif to get a SVO/WVO system installed in their van when there are plenty of awesome shops who do that in LA already. The rock music sound track just seemed to be tossed in to nab a certain demographic and didn't really add to the ambiance of the show that much, IMHO. The principles didn't seem to have much engagment or enthusiasm and I'm guessing none of them has spent much time in front of a camera, or speaking in front of an audience. I don't see this show lasting.

I don't play a TV critic but:

We watched the first two episodes as they aired – and was *disappointed*.

The van ‘conversion’ was a semi-commercial product, preceded by an old-fashioned Blatant Commercial Plug (BCP) for a “bio fuel” reactor. Just add lots of expensive (and not so green) ethanol – oh, BTW, what ever did they do with all of the waste glycerin? Bad ad, bad demo, incomplete story – sigh, again.

Then another BCP for bamboo bicycles – if the crew had actually made one for their own use, maybe – but it was in the end, just an ad.

Sigh, seems to be a really bad copy of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, where those ‘featured’ paid to be covered – as in info-mercial.

I’ll watch the next couple of episodes, but I doubt the embedded stories (adverts) will be any less a giant BCP or worse, green-washing.

YMMV of course.

First, let me say I have no particular animosity toward treehuggers, though the sanctimony and alarmist rhetoric come off as, well, sanctimonious and alarmist. That said, this show is unbelievably bad. The title is not necessarily misleading, though it says nothing about its true nature and message. It's not about "inventions," generally, it's about "green" inventions. Regrettably, you have to watch the show (or at least an entire promo) to get that.

The worst offense of the show, however, is the utter lack of interest generated by the hosts and their various subjects. The promos are so bad I have to mute them. Am I the only one who doesn't give a rat's rectum if some guy's electric bill is "nnnmnouthing" (or whatever he mumbles)? And why do they have to keep asking?

Finally, Sc, please keep in mind that you're in the teleVISION business. There is nothing about this show fit for TV. It's just geeky and dull. And not in a good way.

I for one disagree with the comments I've read. I'm very interested in the show. I'm very interested in finding new ways to produce energy. II wish there was a way I could get a download of the diy windmill to study further.keep on doing a good job of showing the world that there are better ways of living besides gas guzzlers and electric grids...you go boys...buddy brown...

I think that physical time travel is not yet possible but we know that time dilation occurs when any individual is subjected to a fast moving high magnetic field.Time slows down therefore all one need to do is spend a few hours a day in this device for him time would slow down and remain constant to his view point would it not, for all others outside the sphere time would move a the regular rate thus the individual inside the sphere would not age as fast not time travel but a way to cheat time what if such a device exist?

I like the show but i would like to see more things i could do at my home like hot water heaters, heat cooling, how much could i save with sowler power.get off the grid.

jump to top Scott moody says:

None of us were paid to be on the show. We are just backyard inventors, and in the our case, truly off grid and happy to show others how.

jump to top Steve Spence says:

Dear Sirs,
For your bio diesel that stinks , i can impart 15 minute scalar energy + ion to your bio fuel to cancel its odor.
I am Eric Diaz a accidental genius from the Phillipines i also made my CVO biodiesel coming coconuts and have been using 15 minute scalar energy + ion to enhance the burn of fuel thus giving more power and saves in fuel.
May write me at Eric Diaz DSC Complex 4th floor DSC Complex C.Bangoy St. Davao City Phillipines 8000 or cal me at 221 4929. I am still recovering from my head on collision accident and i am living on the graces of my family.
I have some money left for my experiments but i now do not have any work job or salary, hope you can give me a job and use of my being a accidental genius. I also invented my Natural Ph 5 electric wind air generator that make electricity . Take note I am using the scalar energy field to both imparted copper and brass.
Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to inform you that there is a solution to your stinking bio deisel.

I agree with Rolfe I really enjoyed the show, and can appreciate the challenge of appealing to the whole eco concerned Continuum with a single media source. I too would like to be able to have more technical info on some of the projects revealed on the show like the home built wind generator built in NY and the solar amplifier built in Oregon. If anyone has such info I'd really love it if you'd share it. I'd love to see more of the show.
