Clevr: Hans Olsen's Compact Dining Set!

How smart is this? Perfect for small spaces and a truly clever design, Hans Olsen designed this dining set in 1953 for Frem Røjle Møblefabrik, and it "serves as the quintessential model for the holistic integration of form and function. The design is certainly as progressive and relevant today as it was 60 years ago," according to the Design Addict description on eBay.

Imagine what the world would be like, how much less stuff we'd be dealing with, if everything needed to be designed just once every 60 years. Get up close and personal with more pics after the jump.

This is a real revelation -- IKEA last year came out with a very similar table, FUSION, designed by Sandra Kragnert. The main difference is that the IKEA table has a four-legged chair with a curved back that fits into each corner. I wonder if Olsen's design was an inspiration or if Kragnert reinvented the wheel?

You can see a description of the FUSION here:

Nice design, pretty slick.

42" dia. table is not so tiny. Not huge, but not Tokyo sized either.

How comfortable are the chairs? Your legd will rest on the diagonal edge of the seat. The backrest will be quite low as well.

There aren't any photos of what the table looks like with the chairs pulled away from the skirt. I think it might look quite awkward. Also the close up photo of a repair to the chair's back rail indicates a weakness in the construction. And I noted that 3 of the attachments for the table legs are different than the one shown in the close up photo. Also a potential repair.

But overall a very beautiful execution of a strong idea.

I've sat in the fusion before and its pretty uncomfortable because of the squat seat design.

This one actually looks like it has a more comfortable seat but I'd have to sit in it to be sure.

Love the idea though!

Yes, the Ikea design is highly reminiscent of the Hans Olsen - then again there were several "compact dinettes" for apartment living that also play into its gene pool.

I used to have a set - which I got cheaply as the top had been burnt in a fire -- I'm not sure if the photo shows this but the Olsen table had built-in drop leaves to convert it into an oval shape. I will say, however, that as elegant as the design is, the chairs are very impractical. They are uncomfortable, the seat is barely padded, they have very little "give," and the joints are prone to coming apart. It's very easy to just pitch over backwards while sitting in them, so unless you have perfect posture and an extra cushion, forget it.

I prefer the mushroom-based Saarinen chairs and table -- his mission when he designed that was to clear the "slum of legs" underneath most tables, which is pretty evident in the pic here...

And for only $4301, who couldn't afford something like this?
Another excellent idea stomped out by implementation is what this is. High quality solid wood tables can be had for much less. The IKEA version there is made out of pressboard and plywood.

The idea is excellent, but it's only marketable to those who have a $5000 budget for a single table.

I have the IKEA FUSION table and I love it. I have a small apt and it's absolutely PERFECT for it. It's not super comfortable, but it's not so bad when you consider that I have very limited space.
