The Green Bible. No Really, The Green Bible.

Hallelujah! Coming soon to an eco-hotel nightstand near you: a greener Bible. Christian publishing company Thomas Nelson Inc. announced today that it has just come out with the first FSC-certified Bible. With many church leaders taking a stand on environmental issues, we're guessing Thomas Nelson is betting they will put their money where their mouth is. Maybe we will even start to see whole congregations demand sustainably-made Bibles. Tyson Miller of the non-profit Green Press Initiative (which Thomas Nelson INc. is a part of ) chimed in:

Given the Bible’s message of stewardship and the growth of the creation care movement, we hope to see other Bible and religion publishers following Thomas Nelson’s lead through steps to use paper with less impacts on forests, people and the climate.

With this Bible at home and a solar-powered talking Bible for the road, you should have the green Bible beat covered.

I love this! I have been looking for bibles made with recycled paper to no avail but this is great! :) yay.

This is ridiculous. There are millions upon millions of bibles that no one ever uses or reads. Go to any second hand bookstore and you'll find them by the wagonload. If you really must have a bible, and want a green one, then get a used one. My copy is over a hundred years old and belonged some poor sod fighting in the Crimean war. Now THAT's a green bible.

Considering the number of Bibles printed, this could start a very beneficial trend.

Imagine how many trees, how much oil, water, etc. would be saved if they simply STOPPED putting bibles in every hotel room.

What a sham. I agree with the other reader, it's not like used copies are not readily available.

True, the best way to be green is to use a hand-me-down Bible---that is what the book is meant for anyway---to be passed on. However, I applaud the effort to create new Bibles from sustainable resources.

Its not like all the publishers are going to STOP printing bibles... so this IS GOOD NEWS. Stop being so silly. There are plenty of used clothes you could buy instead of purchasing new ones, but then...if everybody did that, after a while there would be no more used clothes...and the printing would go on.

Bibles are not as essential as clothes, but for many, they are very important. Granted most publishers are printing for the money and not the ideal, they are still being bought.

The Bible is the MOST essential thing on the planet.

I agree with everyone who said that we need to read and pass on Bibles, USE the ones we own as well as see that the ones in used bookstores also get used.

You can go as green as Kermit with anything that exists yet if it is not used as it was meant to be used, it is a waste of time and as far as the Bible
is concerned, not using it is sin.

Blessings,

This is a marketing ploy. Bibles for hundreds of years were printed on paper made from linen rags. (as were dollar bills, and other important documents like the constitution)

In case you don't know, 90% of linens were made from hemp. Hemp is the fastest growing, annually renewable biomass on the earth. Hemp paper lasts a long time, is much stronger than tree paper, and doesn't need dioxin to bleach it white. Due to its strength, hemp paper can be made very thin, and still support the weight of a bible held up by a single page...

Many bibles to this day are still printed on paper with hemp. (dollars still have hemp in them, and cigarette papers are mostly made from hemp as well) This in spite of the fact that hemp must be imported at ridiculous prices from Canada and Europe. A crop which grows wild in all 50 states...

This green paper they are pushing is still made from trees. If you really care about global warming, call your congresspeople and demand that Industrial Hemp be fully legalized for paper products, biofuels, plastics, and cement.

What a horrible thought! What are going to do next -- wear recycled clothes to please Al Gore? while he travels in his jet and lives his extravagant lifestyle? Scientists have proven most of this "global warming" is false. We do NOT need a green Bible and hopefully, the public won't purchase them so Thomas Nelson will continue printing their usual Bibles. Come on people! Wake up we are being hyped!

I don't care what color the Bible is just as long as it's read.
